Top 10 Best Gas Mileage Cars for 2008

There are a few ways to describe the current state of affairs when it comes to gas prices. The words insane, crazy, unbelievable and freakishly high all come to mind -- and that's keeping it polite. Car buyers are visiting dealership lots to look at alternatives for the thirsty sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks purchased in the heady days of $1.50 per gallon gas. The question dealers are hearing the most as potential buyers eyeball a new car is, "What's it get for gas mileage?"

A few surprising facts came to light while compiling the list. The first is that the most fuel efficient cars are not necessarily the cheapest to purchase (see our Top 10 Cheapest Cars for 2008). Not so many years ago it was expected that the smallest and cheapest cars were also the most economical. Today, the same hybrid technology that coaxes the best gas mileage also makes the car more expensive to purchase. The starting MSRP on our top 10 begins at $10,890 (the conventional 2008 Kia Rio) and tops out at $25,200 (the hybrid 2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid).

Speaking of hybrids, cars powered with hybrid powertrains from foreign automakers make up the bulk of the list, but there are a handful of conventional gasoline powered cars to be found in our top 10. A hybrid -- the 2008 Toyota Prius -- takes the top honors, with 46-MPG. The conventional gasoline engine in the 2008 Kia Rio bottoms the list, at 29-MPG.

    Computing the Rankings

There was only one benchmark used for our Top 10 Best Gas Mileage Cars list and that was the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) combined fuel economy statistic. The EPA calculates combined fuel economy by combining 55 percent of the EPA-rated city miles per gallon figure with 45 percent of the EPA-rated highway miles per gallon number to create an average gas mileage figure known as Combined EPA Fuel Economy. In theory, this combined number is what the average driver should expect from a car. However, these EPA tests are conducted in a controlled laboratory environment. In real world situations, it is not uncommon to get less fuel economy than indicated by the EPA-rated figures.

    Sport Utility Vehicles
If we opened the field to all comers, two of the vehicles in our top-10 would be sport utility vehicles. The 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid and the 2008 Mercury Mariner Hybrid both have a EPA combined fuel economy rating of 32-MPG. This fuel economy rating easily makes the Escape/Mariner cousins the most fuel efficient SUVs currently available.

The Best Gas Mileage Car Pick: 2008 Toyota Prius

The 2008 Toyota Prius takes top honors in our Top 10 Best Gas Mileage Cars list. Toyota has added a base trim to the 2008 Toyota Prius line-up, which makes the Prius more affordable than ever. The entry-level 2008 Prius comes in with an MSRP of $21,100. The 2008 Toyota Prius 4-Door Liftback, which was the introductory trim in 2007, comes in at $22,325 for 2008. This is a mere $150 price increase over the 2007 model. Combine this pricing with potential tax incentives and excellent gas mileage and ownership of the hybrid Prius looks better than ever.

All 2008 Prius are equipped with a 1.5L inline 4-cylinder producing 110-hp and a variable speed automatic transmission with overdrive. This engine and transmission combined with the hybrid electric system enables the 2008 Prius to achieve 48-mpg city and 45-mpg highway (46 MPG EPA Combined Fuel Economy).
