About Mazda: The Mazda Motor Corporation is a Japanese automobile manufacturer that sells a range of passenger cars, light trucks, minivans and sport utility vehicles. One of the most popular models in recent history is the Mazda MX-5, known as the Mazda Miata. Mazda and its Miata roadster struck a nerve with car buyers in the US, and the first generation Miata sold over 400,000 units between 1989 and 1993. The Miata appealed to an extraordinarily wide market that included buyers in almost every demographic imaginable, from executives to teenagers. The Miata has also found a home on the grassroots racing circuit, and as such aftermarket support is very robust. You can research the Mazda Miata and other Mazda new cars here on Autotropolis.

    Mazda's History

Mazda, as with many Japanese automakers, began as a manufacturer of other products. The Toyo Cork Kogyo Company was founded in 1920 by Jujiro Matsuda to manufacture cork products. It was not until 11 years after its founding that the Toyo Cork Kogyo Company would begin producing motor vehicles. In 1931, the company introduced its first vehicle, the Mazda Mazdago. The Mazdago was a three-wheeled utility truck/motorcycle sold by Mitsubishi. The Mazda Museum still retains an example of a 1935 Mazdago in its collection.

Even though the Toyo Cork Kogyo Company had always produced vehicles under the Mazda name, it wouldn't be until 1984 that the company would officially adopt the Mazda moniker for its operations.
