Current GMC Models
On the commercial side, GMC manufactures a full range of heavy and medium duty trucks, including the W-Series, the C-Series and the T-Series, some of which are sold under the Isuzu and Chevrolet brand in certain markets.
The GMC C-Series is also known as the GMC Topkick, and it serves as either a heavy duty pickup truck, box truck or even tow vehicle depending upon how it is optioned. The Topkick platform also provides the current basis for U.S. President Obama’s Cadillac limousine, due to its robust construction and weight-bearing capabilities. The W and T-Series trucks are cab-over designs which can serve as either box trucks or large capacity haulers.
Light trucks and vans include the full-size Sierra pickup, the mid-size Sonoma pickup and the Savana van, which can be ordered in either passenger or panel configurations. The Sierra is available in half, three-quarter and full ton versions, and features up to four doors for maximum passenger comfort and dual rear wheels for increased towing capacity.
GMC also manufactures sport-utility vehicles and crossovers. The full-size Yukon and Yukon XL (extended wheelbase) can seat up to 8 passengers and possess excellent towing capacity. The GMC Envoy is a mid-size SUV, while the Acadia is a full-size crossover that can handle up to 8 passengers while offering a more car-like ride. A compact SUV called the Terrain is on the way for the fall of 2010, and is positioned as GMC’s most efficient and technologically advanced sport-utility vehicle to date.
GMC's History
GMC's history goes back to 1901 when the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company was established by Max Grabowski. The Rapid Motor Vehicle Company was formed to produce commercial trucks, one of the earliest such companies in the nation. In 1909, General Motors acquired the company along with the Reliance Motor Car Company. In 1911, the two companies were merged and a year later the first GMC Truck was officially launched. Additional acquisitions over the years have bolstered GMC's offerings. At various points in time, GMC has manufactured fire apparatus, ambulances, heavy trucks, motorhomes, buses and military vehicles. During World War II, GMC produced over 600,000 trucks for wartime use.
