    HUMMER’s Mid-Size Sport Utility Vehicle

    By:Todd Jensen, Autotropolis Editor

The 2007 HUMMER H3 is a mid-size 4-door, 5-passenger sport utility vehicle available in 4 trims, the Base, Adventure, Luxury, and the H3X. All four trims are standard with the 3.7-liter Vortec® I5 that produces 242-hp, 242 lb.-ft of torque, and achieves 15-mpg city and 20-mpg highway regardless of trim. The entry-level H3 SUV Base starts at $29,405 with top-of-the-line model H3X coming in at $37,545. A 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard, with a 4-speed automatic as optional equipment.

GM OnStar® is standard on all trims, as is GM’s StabiliTrak electronic stability control system. The HUMMER H3 is rated for a 4,500-pound towing capacity with the automatic transmission and 3,000 with the manual transmission.

The H3 was introduced in 2006 by HUMMER as a lower-priced product with the underpinnings of the modified GMT355 platform (shared with the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon) and the styling of a HUMMER. The engine is also shared with the Colorado and Canyon.

    Off-Road

The relatively civilized H3 does a fine job at living up to its off-road heritage. The H3 can handle 24 inches of water at 5 mph, and 16 inches at 20 mph. Approach and departure angles are 37.5 and 35.5 degrees respectively. Standard ground clearance is 8.5 inches, and the optional 33-inch tires raises the clearance to 9.1 inches. Vertical scaling capability is 16 inches. Selectable four-wheel-drive, automatic locking hubs, 2-speed transfer case, and four-wheel anti-lock brakes help round the off- and on-road abilities of the HUMMER H3. Optional off-road-centric equipment includes rear locking differential and 4:1 two-speed transfer case.
