Shaky economy, high fuel prices, and global warming issues are on the mind of many consumers. Everywhere you look the world is ‘greening’ up. The automobile industry is no different. Alternative fuels, hybrids, electrics and many other types of vehicles are popping up all over the world. In the US, the high oil prices and the new requirements that say the average car and truck must achieve a fuel economy of 35 miles per gallon by the year 2020 are maintaining a trend that started gently several years ago, but never picked up much speed until the last couple. Now the automobile manufacturers are rushing to the drawing board to be the first in the race to produce the most efficient vehicle.
Adding to the concern is the global warming controversy, where vehicles and the transportation industry as a whole are firmly in the spotlight. All of this adds to the growing trend that carries through this year. There is a reduction in overall auto sales and of these there is a definite increase in sales of small, fuel-efficient cars.
