Best Used HUMMER Full-Size Truck - H2 SUT Date : 03/30/2009
When the pickup truck market made the seismic shift from selling everyday work vehicles to fully-outfitted luxury land yachts, it was clear to many manufacturers that there were huge profits to be made if the right vehicles could be placed in showrooms in time to take advantage of the cresting sales wave. While Ford, General Motors and Dodge all continued to offer inexpensive basic versions of all of their trucks, they also began to add reams of new features to their top of the line models. Leather seats, in-vehicle entertainment systems and even sunroofs soon became standard equipment for upscale pickups. As more and more drivers turned to full-size trucks as their standard form of conveyance, these options became increasingly popular and trucks flowed off the lots by the thousands.
HUMMER was in an interesting position when it came to this pickup truck phenomenon. The automaker had been selling full-size SUV’s for over a decade in the form of the original military-spec H1, but the more refined, luxury-oriented H2 had only been available for a few years. This meant that while the company had managed to build a fair amount of hype surrounding their product, they had yet to actually develop a full line of vehicles. Given that the U.S. Army had always had access to a pickup version of the H1, it seemed natural that the new H2 be converted so as to offer the same type of functionality. There was another factor that made the overall idea that much more appealing. The HUMMER H2 was based on the same general platform as the full-size Chevrolet pickups produced by parent company General Motors. This meant that the same type of hardware that had been used to create the Chevrolet Avalanche, a half-pickup, half-SUV could also be applied to the current H2 sport-utility vehicle in order to add a cargo bed while still preserving the overall look and design of the truck.
The result was the HUMMER H2 SUT. Called a ‘sport-utility truck’, the SUT offered the brawny appearance of the original H2 with the extra functionality of an open, configurable cargo area. The vehicle proved popular amongst those who were interested in driving a vehicle as comfortable as the HUMMER but who couldn’t afford to sacrifice any storage space. This article takes a closer look at the best used full-size pickup from HUMMER and gives buyers the information they need to decide if the HUMMER H2 SUT is right for them.
2005 – 2007 HUMMER H2 SUT
The 2005 – 2007 HUMMER H2 SUT is one comfortable truck. Even base models come well equipped, but across the various trim levels buyers have the choice to outfit their HUMMER with a moon roof, an air suspension that absorbs any bumps in the road that might be encountered, satellite radio and fine leather seats. The most interesting feature offered by the SUT is what General Motors calls their Midgate cargo management system. Essentially, the divider between the passenger compartment and the truck can be lowered and the rear seats folded in order to provide 6 uninterrupted feet of storage for hauling. This is the same amount as what is found in a typical four-door full-size pickup truck, transforming the H2 SUT into a truly practical vehicle. The Midgate system also offers a variety of different covered and uncovered cargo configurations.
Underneath the new skin, the 2005 – 2007 HUMMER H2 SUT still bears the same drivetrain as its SUV brother. A 6.0-liter, 325 horsepower V-8 engine provides a serious level of grunt, and 365 lb-ft of torque is more than enough to haul both the 6,400 lb H2 SUT and up to 6,500 lbs of additional weight on a trailer. The vehicle is shifted through a 4-speed automatic transmission. The H2 SUT is of course equipped with a serious, low-range four-wheel drive system, and when it comes to off-road ability it is nearly the match of the original H2, taking a hit only because of the slightly longer rear overhang necessitated by the extension of the spare tire carrier. However, for 95% of buyers, the pickup truck edition of the vehicle will be able to handle anything that gets thrown at it out on a wilderness trail.
The 2005 – 2007 HUMMER H2 SUT offers a significant level of utility, power and pure 4x4 ability that is head and shoulders above many other used full-size trucks on the market.
