Do you love truly cool cars with tons of style, loads of performance and a low price? Then an ultra stylish, truly modern entry-level new car is for you. Good thing these super versatile compact cars are inexpensive. In fact, the No. 1 car on this list has a base MSRP of just $13,990! For this Top 10 list, this auto journalist has test driven each and every model for overall value in performance, design, safety, fuel economy, quality and price.

The 2009 Nissan Cube tops my list because this funky-looking five seater has it all: super cool design inside and out, excellent overall performance, a super fun drive, top safety marks, incredible versatility and lots of standard features. Base MSRP: $13,990.

The 2010 Kia Soul looks almost like a toy car, yet this cool car has some good power and great driving dynamics. Like the Nissan Cube, the Kia Soul has truly unique design DNA. Base MSRP: $13,300.

The 2009 MINI Cooper. A bit more than the $20,000, this in-a-class-of-its-own British sports car is one of the most fun cars to drive ever. And it looks damn good too! Base MSRP: $20,200.

VW’s New Beetle is one of the first ultra stylish cars on the modern road. The New Beetle is still an overall good buy for performance, quality and functionality. MSRP: $18,290.

The 2009 Scion xB is one of my most favorite cars to drive because of its versatility, overall excellent design and smooth performance. The 2009 model marks a more rounded shape to this boxy ride, but the curves just add to the Scion xB’s stylish good looks. Base MSRP: $15,750.

The 2009 Honda Element has been credited with helping start the “boxy” movement. Like the Scion xB, the Honda Element is has excellent overall marks, especially in versatility. Base MSRP: $20,275.

The 2009 Chevrolet HHR is akin to Scion xB and Honda Element in its versatility and yet this retro panel truck from the 1940s has the one-of-a-kind retro style. Base MSRP: $18,720.

The 2009 Volkswagen Rabbit still looks like a toy car from the outside, but inside delivers room, cool minimalist German design and super zippy totally fun-to-drive performance. Base MSRP: $15,600.

Yes, the 2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser is still on the market (and at a low price!) with its cool retro design both inside and out. Base MSRP: $15,970.

The 2009 Honda Insight is styled more like a sedan, but there’s a decided style edge to this award-winning Toyota Prius competitor. Base MSRP: $19,800.
