For most of the SUV era, Subaru positioned itself as a direct alternative to large, bulky SUVs while allowing the interior space and rugged capabilities similar to the bigger vehicles. Although Subaru began selling cars in the U.S. in 1965, it wasn't until 1996 where all-wheel drive became standard to improve safety and off-road maneuverability. The Subaru lineup includes five vehicles (the Impreza, Legacy, Forester, Outback and Tribeca), but all of them feature horizontally opposed engines for increased smoothness and stability. The turbocharged Impreza WRX STI continues to be a powerhouse in rally races as well as a popular choice among tuner enthusiasts.
