Although smart has been producing cars since 1994 under ownership of Daimler (Mercedes-Benz parent company), consumers in the United States didn't get a first hand view of the supermini until 2008. The only model currently available in North America is the smart fortwo with two possible configurations: coupe or cabriolet. Originally designed to park "nose in" for the average parallel parking spot, three fortwos can park in the same place as a single conventional car. All-electric and hybrid versions of the fortwo are planned, but no word yet as to whether these ultra fuel-efficient vehicles would ever be available in the U.S.
