Thinking about a 2009 Chevrolet Corvette? Drive these cars before you buy!

It’s an icon of American sports car design, it boasts heart-stopping performance numbers and it is surprisingly affordable. Starting at $73,925, the 2009 Corvette Z06 is what fans of the fiberglass-bodied performance vehicle have been waiting for their entire lives, a fire-breathing dragon of a car that can hold its own with any vehicle on the road, no matter how exotic the design or how high the price tag. At the heart of this beast is its engine – a 7.0 liter, aluminum V8 that cranks out a sublime 505 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. When matched with the vehicle’s 6-speed manual transmission, the Corvette Z06 can accelerate to 60 miles per hour from a standing start in just 3.6 seconds – faster than it took for you to read this entire sentence. The quarter mile disappears in just 11.3 seconds, and the car’s top speed is rated at a lofty 200 miles per hour.

Speed isn’t the only characteristic that puts the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 into supercar territory. The attention to creating a light yet stiff chassis and suspension system ensures that the vehicle’s handling can keep up with its long legs. The Corvette is more than just a muscular behemoth, it is a veritable Cheetah, with incredible cornering capabilities and phenomenal brakes. It also boasts gee-whiz features like a heads-up display that projects important vehicle information onto the windshield in front of the driver to help keep their eyes stuck on the road during adrenaline-laced redline runs.

The 2009 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 has become the attainable dream car of many automobile enthusiasts. Unsurprisingly, however, there are a number of other vehicle which boast similar performance specs vying for the attentions of the speed-obsessed. While some might be priced a bit higher, or take a different route to their dizzying performance levels, this article mentions 4 other cars you must drive before putting a deposit on a Z06.

2009 Dodge Viper SRT10 Coupe – MSRP $89,340

The 2009 Dodge Viper SRT10 Coupe is the latest in a long line of king snakes that have been the Corvette’s closest competition for dominance on America’s streets. Until the emergence of the Z06 model just past the turn of the millennium, the Viper enjoyed nearly a decade of unchallenged performance domination. Although the gap between the two vehicles has been greatly narrowed, the Dodge can still boast advantages in a number of areas. Its 8.4 liter V10 engine produces an astronomical 600 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque, which is shunted through a 6-speed manual transmission to massive 19 inch rear tires. In addition to almost 100 extra horsepower, the Viper is also 0.1 seconds quicker when launching to 60 miles per hour – although quarter mile performance is approximately 0.3 seconds slower. Top speed of the Viper is given by Dodge to be 202 miles per hour.

Even a cursory examination of these performance statistics indicate that the Viper and the Corvette are separated by no more than a hair when it comes to raw numbers. What truly differentiates the two sports cars are their radically different driving experiences. While the Corvette is refined and livable on a daily basis thanks to its excellent traction and stability control system and its comfortable suspension, the Viper is an absolute handful, especially when driven near the limit. With no electronic safety nets on hand, the 2009 Dodge Viper SRT10 Coupe relies solely on the skill of the driver to keep it pointed in the right direction. Great care must be exercised with the right foot, especially in the rain, so as to avoid upsetting the extremely powerful car.

The 2009 Dodge Viper SRT10 Coupe is a raw and visceral automobile that feels more connected to the road than the more civilized Corvette. If pure potential and explosive response are favored over predictability, then the Viper makes an excellent, although pricier alternative to the Z06.

2009 Cadillac XLR-V – MSRP $104,215

Stretching the budget into the stratosphere is the 2009 Cadillac XLR-V (XLR pictured). This vehicle rounds out the trio of domestic supercar competitors and is also included due to the fact that it is based on the same platform as the Corvette. Replacing the naturally-aspirated V8 of the 'Vette is a 443 horsepower supercharged Northstar engine, whose 8-cylinders also produce 414 lb-ft of torque. The Cadillac is slower than the Z06, as it reaches 60 miles per hour in 4.6 seconds, with a quarter mile time of 13 seconds. A 6-speed automatic transmission handles the gear shifting duties, and the vehicle can reach an electronically limited top speed of 155 miles per hour.

While it is clear that the 2009 Cadillac XLR-V does not offer quite the same level of performance as the 'Vette or the Viper, what it does provide are a boatload of luxury features such as a power retractable hard top, a voice activated navigation system, hand wrapped leather seats, steering wheel and trim, as well as beautiful wood interior accents. While a large percentage of driving enthusiasts could care less about how comfortable their cockpit accoutrements are, there are still some out there who value this level of luxury a great deal – and they also usually happen to be in a position to spend 6 figures on an automobile.

The 2009 Cadillac XLR-V might be a sheep in wolf’s clothing to some, but the suit that it wears is striking, and the driving experience afforded by its more forgiving setup will endear it to anyone who prefers “nine tenths” performance over having to make sacrifices to touch the edge of the envelope.

2010 Nissan GT-R – MSRP $76,840

Returning close to the economic orbit of the Z06 is the only Japanese competitor on this list, the 2010 Nissan GT-R. The GT-R also happens to be a vehicle which doesn’t approach the question of how to add more speed simply by throwing an enormous engine between the two front fenders. Instead, the Nissan GT-R is outfitted a 3.8 liter V6 that employs twin turbochargers to squeeze out a stout 485 horsepower and 434 lb-ft of torque. The GT-R is also unique in that its transmission is a 6-speed dual clutch unit that can be set to Normal, R or Snow modes in order to adapt to the driving conditions at hand. The transmission can also be set to fully automatic mode.

Thanks to the phenomenal grip of its all-wheel drive system and a special launch control transmission feature, the 2010 Nissan GT-R can reach 60 miles per hour in a scant 3.2 seconds, as well as see the end of the quarter mile in only 11.5 seconds. Top speed of the GT-R has been recorded as 195 miles per hour. Although heavy when compared to its rear-wheel drive competitors, the Nissan is a technological tour de force that is an incredible performer both on the street and the track, having equaled or bettered previous lap times set by supercars from Ferrari and Porsche at several prominent race circuits.

The 2010 Nissan GT-R’s video-game inspired styling isn’t for everyone, not will all sports car fans have their pulse quickened by a turbocharged V6 engine, but for those willing to accept the vehicle based on its performance merits, the GT-R is more than a match for the only slightly cheaper Z06.

2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S – MSRP $87,000

There are almost as many versions of the Porsche 911 as there are letters in the alphabet, but the model whose price fits best with the other vehicles mentioned in this article is the 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S. Close to the entry level position on the 911 pagoda, the Carrera S features an inline 6-cylinder engine that displaces 3.8 liters and develops 385 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. The vehicle can be ordered with either a traditional 6-speed manual transmission or Porsche’s PDK double-clutch automatic, which boasts a quicker 0 to 60 mile per hour time (4.3 seconds) but a lower top speed (186 versus 188 miles per hour). The quarter mile elapses in around 12 seconds, and the slightly more expensive 4S model adds all-wheel drive which can be helpful when the going gets slippery.

The 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S might seem out of place when compared to the other vehicles mentioned here due to its somewhat lower power output, but its saving grace is its handling. With the engine mounted at the rear of the car, the 911 Carrera S is an entirely different animal than the Corvette, and some prefer the more refined feel of its suspension and chassis design. The output from the inline 6 is also incredibly smooth and linear, with an almost effortless feeling of acceleration accompanying any depression of the loud pedal.

The 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S is not as fast or as ostentatious as a 'Vette or a Viper, but it does provide a classic European sports car experience wrapped in a very classy package. The nimbleness of the vehicle’s design more than makes up for any perceived power deficit, and the timeless styling will turn just as many heads as any other supercar, but for entirely different reasons.

Top 5 Vehicles For Impressing A First Date

It’s a cliché, but the fact remains that the automobile you drive can say a lot about your personality. Vehicle choice is often a window into the inner workings of the mind, and it can indicate how practical, enthusiastic or disinterested you are regarding your automobile. There is no situation which brings this into focus more than a first date. When you pick up your date for the evening, often times your car or truck is prominently put on display. Like it or not, it can lead to a certain perception being created about you before you have even had the chance to get too deep into conversation.

It’s important not to get too concerned with how your car can influence the course of events during a first date. However, it can be interesting to look at how you can use a specific model of car to your advantage and really make a great first impression. This article talks about the 5 best vehicles for impressing a first date.

The Environmentally-Conscious Type – 2010 Toyota Prius

Not everyone is wowed by an expensive luxury car, or huge horsepower. Sometimes, it’s what an automobile says about a person’s lifestyle decisions that makes the biggest impression. With so many people focused on reducing their carbon footprint and lowering the amount of resources they consume in their daily life, it is only natural that a vehicle which shows just how sensitive you are to environmental concerns can be a great ice breaker.

The 2010 Toyota Prius is one of the most fuel efficient hybrids on the road. Fuel economy for the Prius is rated at a shocking 51 miles per gallon in the city and 48 miles per gallon on the highway, making it the most frugal vehicle in America. The vehicle’s Hybrid Synergy Drive technology has been tweaked and refined when compared to the outgoing model, and when combined with the new 1.8 liter engine produces 132 horsepower. This performance increase translates into a 0 to 60 miles per hour time of under 10 seconds, a far cry from the slow hybrids of old.

The inside of the Prius has also been improved, which means not only will your date be awed by your dedication to lower emissions but they will also be quite comfortable as well. A futuristic feel runs throughout the cockpit which adds a bit of high tech intrigue to the compact car’s driving experience. Optional leather seats, a navigation system and a solar powered ventilation system help to dress up the vehicle with a few extra toys and amenities.

The 2010 Toyota Prius won’t win any grudge matches stoplight to stoplight, but it will definitely save you enough gas money to splurge for a fancy dinner and a Broadway show.

The Performance-Car Type – 2009 Porsche 911 Turbo

Picking up a date in a performance car is often a tricky proposition. If the vehicle is too over the top, then suspicions about over-compensation and maturity might come into play. If the car is a little too low key, then only a true enthusiast will pick up on its speediness and handling prowess. Fortunately, there is a balance between restraint and extreme road-going capability – the 2009 Porsche 911 Turbo (911 Carrera pictured).

Arguably the top of the Porsche line, the 911 Turbo features a timeless design that has seen its shape carefully and lovingly evolved over decades of engineering and development. While aero add-ons like a front damn and a rear spoiler are definitely present, they are much subtler than the Lamborghinis and Ferraris against which the 911 competes. This helps the vehicle fit in well with the valets at a black tie banquet without attracting too much attention when pulled up to the curb.

When out on the open road, the Porsche will more than satisfy the speed-oriented desires of even the most hard to please date. The beast’s 3.6 liter, 6-cylinder engine boasts 480 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, which can be funneled through either a 6-speed manual or 5-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission to all four wheels. The extra grip afforded by this system helps to keep the 911’s shiny side up during the most intense of rain or snowstorms, which means that you and your date will arrive at your destination not only extremely quickly but also safe and sound.

The 2009 Porsche 911 Turbo is a supercar in sheep’s clothing, a vehicle whose classic lines hint at the power within without screaming about it at the top of its lungs. This subtle mix of performance and restraint will be music to the ears of your date.

The Outdoorsy-Type – 2009 Ford F-150

Not all dates take place within an urban environment. Sometimes a first date calls for a day full of kayaking, hiking or some other nature-based activity that can only be found far off of the beaten path. To successfully pull off an outdoorsy date it’s important to have a vehicle which can not only provide the utility and hauling needed for all of the required accessories, but also one which won’t let any obstacles get between you and that first impression – in other words, a vehicle like the 2009 Ford F-150.

The Ford F-150 is so versatile that a version exists for almost every possible driving scenario. This means that the pickup truck can be outfitted so that it is not only useful but also comfortable, making that drive from town into the wilderness as painless as possible no matter how bumpy the ride. The F-150’s open truck bed can be ordered in long or short editions, up to 8 feet in length. This is more than enough room to haul dirt bikes or camping gear, and if you ever run out of room out back you can easily tow over 10,000 lbs behind the F-150. A 248 horsepower 4.6 liter, a 292 horsepower, 3-valve version of the same engine and a 5.4 liter unit making 310 horsepower round out the possibilities under the hood. Four-wheel drive is also available to take you and your date where the roads just don’t go.

The 2009 Ford F-150 is a truck that delivers on its promise of great hauling and serious off-road ability. This means that even if your first date takes you a fair distance from home, you will never be far from a vehicle that you can rely on to bring you back to civilization at the end of the day.

The Fun In The Sun Type – 2009 MINI Cooper convertible

Almost everyone loves a convertible, but to really make a drop top date special, it helps to be driving an automobile as unique and as personal as the 2009 MINI Cooper convertible. The vehicle’s small dimensions and cozy design will leave you and your date feeling as though you are the only two people in the universe, a sensation amplified by the panorama of stars arrayed above you as you drive off into the night together.

The 2009 MINI Cooper convertible might claim a backseat, but for all practical purposes the car is a two-seater, which is perfect for a first date. There’s no danger of any hangers-on or double dates tagging along and spoiling your plans. The MINI Cooper is also capable of outrunning even the most determined third wheel thanks to its 118 horsepower, 1.6 liter engine that can also produce 114 lb-ft of torque. This might not sound all that impressive at first, but with a curb weight well under 3,000 lbs the MINI just doesn’t have all that much mass to motivate, making it quick off the line and a joy in the corners.

The MINI Cooper rag top’s unique profile helps it to stand out from the other small convertibles on the market, and the power top can be raised or lowered in just 15 seconds, even while the vehicle is moving. This is perfect when taking refuge from any sudden rain storms on a beach date or protecting fancy clothes from the elements during a night on the town.

The 2009 MINI Cooper convertible offers enough novelty that it will be a tough car for a first date to forget. It also provides a great driving experience and comfortable ride that makes it a practical and fun choice for two people who are just getting to know each other.

The Practical Type – 2009 Ford Flex

If the person you are taking on a first date has the kind of personality that can’t help but cherish the practical side of life, then the 2009 Ford Flex makes an excellent choice as chariot. Stylish and fresh, the Ford Flex manages to combine its great looks with a raft of utility that has helped to make it one of the more appealing crossover vehicles on the market.

The 2009 Ford Flex’s design harkens back to the slab-sided station wagons of old. Its box-like shape and flat roof don’t look dated, however, thanks to the inclusion of style lines and modern cues which anchor the Flex squarely in the 21st century. Inside the crossover, there is a significant amount of storage space. 83.2 cubic feet are available in total, allowing the Flex to swallow the equivalent of a small bedroom without breaking a sweat. Second row seats fold forward at the touch of a button to make rear row access simple, and an optional in-vehicle refrigerator can help keep snacks cool on their way to a picnic date.

The 2009 Ford Flex is a roomy and well equipped automobile that should impress dates with even the highest expectations of utility. It’s 3.5 liter, 252 horsepower V6 and available all-wheel drive also gives the crossover enough grunt to get you to the date on time no matter how late you might have left the house.
