Since as early as the 1980s, car manufacturers have been producing flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs). Flex-fuel technology allows these vehicles to run either on traditional gasoline or a blended fuel of gasoline and ethanol. Flex fuels can be composed of up to 85 percent ethanol (e85).
Ethanol fuels offer several advantages over traditional gas fuels. First and foremost, ethanol is a renewable fuel (produced from grains such as corn) that helps reduce the world's dependence on petroleum. It also reduces greenhouse gas emissions and may be able to improve the performance output of your vehicle.
Thousands of flex-fuel vehicles are sold in America each year. Yet, many drivers remain unaware of their vehicle's ability to accept ethanol fuels. To determine if your current car accepts flex fuels, an FFV identification sticker may be visible on the back of the gas door. Unique badging or other indicators may also be available. Consult your vehicle's user manual for more information.
For new car shoppers, finding a car with flex-fuel capabilities may be a desirable feature. For a comprehensive list of 2010 e85 FFVs, please see the list below:
