    2002 X5 4.4 A/C compressor belt/tensioner.

A/C works most of the time, then not at all, next day......ice cold air.

    Belt too loose?

Tried to tighten the belt.....linkage adjustment slot all the way to the stop.

Purchased a new belt tensioner for A/C, installed same.

Compressor dropped some when the old belt tensioner was removed.

....with new belt tensioner installed....THE BELT IS REALLY LOOSE!

Do you have a drawing that shows the belt and pullies / idler?

Any idea how to reposition the compressor?

Belts look good, should they be changed anyhow?

    Thanks, Ernie.

If I have to I cut the A/C belt and drive to dealer, like to do it myself though.

    ....long drive!

    Thanks, Ernie.

Ok, the big thing here is the 'compressor drop'- this compressor is solid mounted to the side of the engine, with what should be 4 bolts, with 13mm heads. If this compressor moved at all, you need to bolt it back to the block- there is no adjustment to it, it bolts on in one place only. If it's actually the clutch/pulley that moved, your compressor is bad and will need to be replaced.

As to the slot adjustment for the tensioner, these are almost 99% of the time at the top of the slot, and the little tensioner/shock absorber takes care of the deflection.

As far as the irregular cooling, this would not be a belt in this instance, as belt slippage would have a loud screech.

    I forgot-

Try to reinstall the old tensioner, after you've made sure the compressor is solidly mounted. As far as cutting the belt, I assume you don't wat to remove it the old fashioned way?

    Good luck-
