I just picked up a used 98 A6 and the AM/FM cassette is inoperable. It just says SAFE on the display. Any ideas??

you need unlocking code, usually 4 digits. check radio manual how to unlock

Have you got buttons TP and RDS if so you need to press both together then on your radio screen it should show 1000 then with your radio code press the number 1 until it show the first number of your code then on to number 2 keep pressing until it shows your second code number then number and number four when you have all the number set on your radio screen again press together the TP and RDS buttons to set your code.
