    popping noise

    Hello!

I own a 2005 Kia Amanti, I hear a popping noise when I turn and now when I brake...What could be the source of this, I have googled the problem and see that other owners have the same problem, but no solution. Is it really necessary to replace the timing belt at 60k? I have around 65k on my car.

    Thanks,

    Re: popping noise

Have your CV joints checked. It sounds like this may be your popping noise. You can check it yourself by turning the wheel so you can check the driveshaft boots. Generally, the popping noise will happen because the boot was torn and dirt and debris have entered the joint and caused wear.

As far as the timing belt is considered, that is suggested maintenance by the manufacturer so I would adhere to it. It may sound expensive fixing something that isn't broken, but it's much cheaper than repairing the engine if the belt happens to break.

    Re: popping noise

Good job Jeffrey Ross , popping noise when turning are well known for the outer cv joint, take your car to a parking lot and drive in full circle to the right.if the popping noise is heared, this is probably the right outer cv joint, if turning full circle to the left, and popping noise is heared, that will be your left outer cv joint.
now check the inner cv joint by driving brake and braking suddently, a clunk noise is probably the iiner cv joint.
they are replaced in pairs, so it does not matter which one making noise.
