having a problem with 2002 trailblazer

Can anyone help me with this problem?

My trailblazer dosen't always start.  Sporadically, I will drive somewhere and when I go to leave, the car will not start.  This is not an electrical problem, the dash, air system, radio all come on, but when I turn the key, nothing happens to start the engine.

This has happened maybe 10 times, but it has happened 3 of those times in the last 2 weeks.  If I call for road service, by the time they get to me, the car starts.

Has anyone else had this problem?  Can you tell be what causes it?

My dealer wants to do extensive diagnotics and that sounds very expensive.

    Help!!

Possible starter.  When it gets hot it might not get a good connection.  Another possibility are the battery connections.  Make sure the connections are very clean and tight.  It doesn't take much juice to light up the dash, but it does take a bit to turn the starter.  If they are a little loose or corroded, it may not be enough to let the power from the battery through.  Have the battery tested also .  It never hurts to check.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.  I have been puzzled by this.  I will check the starter and the battery connection.

Saw this site on Cabelas forum  http://repairpal.com/estimator  Punched in your info and it said:

About this Repair: Starter Replacement for your 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer

    Why this happens
    • A defective battery can contribute to the failure of a starter.

    • If the battery cables are found to be heavily corroded, they may need to be replaced along with the starter.

    • Corroded battery terminals can exhibit the same symptoms as a faulty starter.

    • For vehicles with an automatic transmission, ask to have the neutral safety switch inspected before replacing the starter.  A bad safety switch has the same symptoms as a defective starter.

    • If only a "click" is heard when trying to start the vehicle, the battery may be low, battery connections may be loose, or a starter solenoid may have failed.  The entire starting and charging system should be inspected before replacing the starter.

    • Malfunctioning starters may make unusual noise when the vehicle is starting.

    Hope this helps
