Buick Regal 1998; turn signal stalk causing dead short.

I have a 1998 Buick Regal GS with approximately 85 000 miles on the odometer.  As of the last 10 000 miles or so, when the turn signal is used, the lights come on the dash, the engine begins to shut down and I am sure it would stall if I didn't put the turn signal stalk in the neutral position.  I have not been helped by the a Buick dealer who said he researched the problem and said he had no knowledge of such a situation.  I went on line to the NHTSA site and found no fewer than 8 complaints lodged that were reporting exactly what I am experiencing.  At the same NHTSA site, there are numerous complaints about engines cutting out WHILE IN MOTION.  I asked (4/17/08) NHTSA what it would take to nudge GM to voluntarily recall this model.  What I suspect is that the same problem exists with a ton of GM vehicles.  In the near future, I will be visiting the NHTSA complaint site to see if the Regal of other model year has experienced the very same problem.  I guess it takes a number of deaths of important people for NHTSA or anyone else to push GM into doing what's morally.  And people wonder why the Japanese are taking the lead in automobile satisfaction.  Does anyone out there know what the solution is to my vehicle's problem?  Please and thanks. Hello, I am another person with the same problem.  I am having trouble figuring out what to do.  It is getting too cold to hold my arm out the window to make my turn signals.  Often when I use my turn signal the dash board lights up and car stalls.  This is a very dangerous situation as it normally happens in intersections, including when turning left in front of on coming cars.  I got to get it fixed.  In my research on the internet I have found reports from people with similar problems who have replaced turn signal and/or computer but problem was still not solved.  I have also been working with the Buick Dealer ... he is not aware of any such problem and wants to put it through diagnostic testing and so on.  It tends to be intermittent with me.  It never happens when on a test drive, only when I really need to make a turn.  Maybe I have my foot on brake at the same time.  One solution that is discussed is to replace the ignition switch and harness assembly.  The write-up suggesting this fix says that he told the Dealer what to do and it worked.  If anyone can give me more specific info on this fix, I would very much appreciate it.  If it really does work, I would like to be able to be very specific in telling the Dealer what to do.  At this time they are looking at replacing signal switch and computer.  I spent a few hundred dollars on diagnostics already and was told that the harness and computer did not show any problems.  Any help would be appreciated.  cabishop

I'm also having this problem.  I have gone from having a car that I loved....to being scared to drive the thing.  I can turn my signal on one time and the dash lights up and gauges go crazy.  The next time it might kill the engine.  The next time everything works ok.   .   I feel like I'm playing a dangerous game everytime I turn on my signal lights.  The signal lever switch was replaced and that did not solve the problem,  just hurt my pocketbook.   I don't have alot of money for the Buick Dealer to play around with my car.  I hope someone out there has some ideas!!
