    please help

We just installed a new engine on a 1999 buick century custom, attached everything to it and now the car won't stay cranked.  its backfiring/popping under the hood. We attached the obd II tester to it and its showing passed. what could be the problem?

    Re: please help

is it a 3.8 or a 2.8???? it sounds like a timing issue or a mixed up firing order I'm looking at the firing orders for both engines right now..

    Re: please help

is the coil pack good??? you can test it using a ohm meter check the resistance between the primary terminals on the underside of the coil pack they should read 0,50 ohms to 0,90 ohms  then check the resistance on the secondary terminals they should read between 5,000 to  8,000 ohms if it fails either test its a bad coil pack,,  the firing order for the 3.8  vin b and 3 engines  is=1,6,5,4,3,2   the 3.8  vin c,1 and L and k engines is= is the same 1,6,5,4,3,2    there is no 2.8 engine I read wrong..   note there are two diferent engines look at the vin number  the 8 letter usually tells you that  such as the c in the number or the k so on and so on.. there are two diferent coil packs for these engines  and they are not the same firing order on the coil the  the number two on one is in the middle  on the other the number 4 is in the middle.... you might have the wrong coil pack on the engine hope this helps you....

    Re: please help

We have a 3.1 engine, I hope it's not the timing, this is a brand new engine, I haven't checked the coil, I'll try that and see what happens.

    Thanks for your help

    Re: please help

if it is the timing,  if its backfiring thru the engine compartment hense manifold,, then you probably have the firing order wrong when i pull that year car up it came with  the 3,8 ill check again,, is it a distributarless engine???  or does it have a dist  if so it might be a 180 out, meaning it wasn't top dead center when the ditributer was put in,,  speaking from experiance when we put enginge in we thought we had it top dead center  but it wasn't tdc on the compression stroke it was tdc on the exhaust stroke and when we put in the dist and lined it up we were 180 out  and it backfired like crazy trying to start it as soon as we took it out and got it right  (kittyville),, brand new engine its not going to be internal timing..  if its a coil  i saw the firing order for the coil and the enginebut it was a 3.8 was your other engine a 3.8??? thas the only engine it list for that year car.. sorry just was trying to help..

    Re: please help

Make sure the O2 sensor is plugged in correct or you will ruin the engine FAST.
