Before starting the oil level appears full. After a short run time "low oil" is indicated. I stop the vehicle and check, and find no oil on the dipstick. After 10-15 min shut down time, the oil level returns to full. Where is it going?

had a 78 xj6, do this, lots of sludge in top of engine, keeping it from draining, to crankcase, pull the valve cover to check
