    Chevy Cavalier problem

Have a 98 with 241,000 miles.  Was driving with air conditioner on (the only thing I did different) on the highway.  Pulled off onto service road, the car died about 400 feet past the exit.  Was able to pull over and restart it.  Drove it home (without the air conditioner) with no problems.  The car didn't show any warning lights or was running erraticly at the time.  Was it just a fluke? or is the car going to die. (It's been such a great car, haven't had much trouble with it at all)

    Re: Chevy Cavalier problem

I own a 99 Rally Sport Cavalier - the only owner- I drove her out of the Chevy dealer off the showroom floor.. out of the doors -- I love my car. BUT ..my problem I had similar problems and hopefully yours wont get as bad as mine did. Altho I've read about recalls for alot of these problems on 98/99/00 Cavaliers My  problems started about a year ago.  I had air conditioning problems too...it worked great - very quick to cool inside of car..then it quit working, I took my car  in -mechanic said there was a leak and she wont hold free-on anymore. ($800-900 to fix) needless to say I'm stuck with rolling down my windows.  BUT then ...I  would be driving down the road, freeeway, where ever and different lights from my instrument panel would come on ...at random,... my digital odometer would read crazy i.e. 888888888 or fragmented letters...THEN my car would just DIE  AS I AM DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY -I'd lose all power and I have to coast off of the road. But ..because this would happen while in front of other "speeding" vehicles and big trucks I learned to try and stay calm-put my car in Neutral, turn the key to restart and then put it back in Drive.(this only worked for awhile-then she quit all together)   This went on for quite awhile (until I got $$ for parts) I knew what to look and listen for ....when I started her up ..... IF the proper lighs did not come on OR IF the "bells or ding-ing" noises did NOT sound as they normally would OR if they did NOT go off as they normally would  OR  IF my odometer read funny,...OR the worse is when my ETS light  coems on --that makes my car jerk really hard when she shifts (automatic) and makes a high pitched noise...  I knew right then BEFORE I put my car in gear that she was gonna DIE on me before I turned the key off.and reached my destination  sometimes I could take the key out turn it upside down  -put it back in the ignaition and she'd run ok sometimes not     I tried everthing  to fix her.I eventually replace the IGNITION SWITCH )and that did it.....runs great now no more problems .......until last week ....my phantom lights are randomly flickering again.especially my ETS (starting to jerk again while she shifts gears)and my ALTERNATOR  lights  ..so i am hoping it is only my alternator that needs to be replaced... good luck  rs58
