ummm...I could be completely off here...but have you had the timing belt replaced yet? Just this Friday, the timing belt on my '91 Civic broke as I was driving over the mountain pass. The car was going fine, then it just started to lose power kind of like when you run out of gas, I made it to the side of the road and put on the brakes and the engine completely shut off, the car was just on. I noticed that the Temperature gage was all the way up (I wasn't low on water or coolant). I let it cool down to about half way and tried to start it again and I would describe it as the engine was turning, but not completely turning over to start, it is not the same sound as when trying to start the car without enough gas where it just cranks and cranks and sounds terrible. This sounded like the engine is turning and then at the moment in which it would normally completely turn over and start, it just dies (and doesn't continue to crank), if you hold the key and keep trying to get it start, the sound just repeats itself. Also, I don't know if this has anything to do with it, one of the things my dad did before we found out that the timing belt had snapped, was he tested for spark by taking a screwdriver and sticking it where the spark plug goes and holding it just above a bolt to ground it, then had me just try the engine real quick, so that he could watch to see if a spark jumped between the two, there wasn't a spark for at least 2 of the 4 on my car. Anyways, I hope that this helps just a little. I also hope that if your timing belt did break, that when it did, it didn't bend a valve. In my case, I found out that Honda's are notorious for having their timing belts go bad and most of the time when they break they bend valves and I've been told that at that point it's almost easier to replace the whole engine. Good Luck!
