    2001BMW325I OVERHEATING

I have a 2001 bmw 325i it over heats while stopped with the a/c on only.  New thermostat, radiator, bled all air. fan is working but stops sometimes. bmw wants $1000 to order a new fan. It might not be the fan. All ideas will be helpful.

    Re: 2001BMW325I OVERHEATING

WHY DOES BMW SAY IT IS THE FAN AND A $1000 SEEMS A LITTLE STEEP FOR A COOLING FAN,THERE IS A COOLANT TEMP SENSOR THAT CONTROLS THE FAN AND FAN SPEED, YOU CAN CHECK THE FAN YOURSELF BY TAPING ON THE FAN MOTOR WHEN IT SUPPOSED TO BE WORKING. BMW HAD A PROBLEM WITH THEIR COOLING FANS. THEY ALSO HAD PROBLEM WITH THEIR WATER PUMPS,THE IMPELLARS WERE MADE OF PLASTIC AND WOULD SPIN ON THE WATER PUMP SHAFT AT TIMES

Thanks for responding.                                                                                                                                                                                                 BMW says its better to order a new fan. But $1000 is alot of $$$$$$$. I bought the car only 4mo. ago from a dealer. The fan works ,but sometimes it just stops. But   it overheats only with the a/c on. In FL. you need a/c!!  Is that sensor in the radiator hose? There is a recall on the aux cooling fan on 2001 325, but BMW said my car wasn't recalled.

    Re: 2001BMW325I OVERHEATING

I just spoke to BMW, there are 3 sensors    coolant temp sensor, thermostat housing sensor, & lower sensor in the radiator hose. So I told them I just put a new thermostat in. They said well, the sensor is on the thermostat, but the new thermostat could be bad too. But I don't think so.

    Re: 2001BMW325I OVERHEATING

HELLO, I DON'T RECALL THE TEMP SWITCH BEING ON THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING ON THE 3 SERIES, IF THE CAR ONLY OVERHEATS WITH A/C ON SOUNDS LIKE YOUR MISSING THE SECOND SPEED FOR THE FAN WHEN DOES THE FAN STOP WORKING, THERE ARE 3 SWITCHES AND A RELAY 1 FOR THE COMPUTOR TO  LET IT KNOW THE TEMP 1 FOR THE TEMP GAUGE AND 1 DAUL SWITCH FOR THE COOLING FAN (LOW AND HIGH SPEED) DOES THE FAN CLUTCH DRAW ENOUGH AIR THROUGH THE RADIATOR. AGAIN $1000 FOR AN AUX COOLING FAN SEEMS KINDA STEEP.I WILL CHECK WITH A FRIEND THAT WORKS FOR A BMW PARTS DEPT AND GET BACK TO YOU. LAST COOLING FAN I BROUGHT I PAID $250.00 AND CHARGED 2 HRS.LABOR A FAR CRY FROM A $1000. I'LLGET BACK TO YOU

    Re: 2001BMW325I OVERHEATING

MY 01 325I FAN BLADES RECENTLY EXPLODED DOING DAMAGE TO THE RADIATOR, POWER STEERING COOLER, SENSORS HOSES ETC ETC. THIS COST ME OVER $1500.00 TO REPAIR BUT THE FAN BLADE ONLY COST ME $69.95, the fan clutch cost $189.95, water pump pully $39.95, these parts were all purchased at an import parts supplier, not a dealer. Has anyone ever had a fan explode like that? It was so powerful it actually put a 2 inch long slit thru the hood.
