    1988 Toyota Camry

4 Cylinder Camry - Overheating- cooling fans will not run automatically - replaced thermostat and relay- fan motors check out ok, can be bi-passed and will run. What else could it be?

    Re: 1988 Toyota Camry

I have a 1990 Camry 4 cyl that's doing the exact opposite....fans run ONLY when either the air conditioner is switched on, or when the car is NOT running and ALL electrical is turned off.  Turn the key to the on position and the fans stop....weird deal.  There is a switch on mine right in the thermostat housing...I'd assume you've got one too.  It's a temperature activated switch that's supposed to be controlling the on/off of the fans.  That was the first thing I replaced on mine.  Ended up not being the problem, but you might have better success than I did.  I later talked with a service manager at my local Toyota dealer who advised that before taking it in to them that I should try to eliminate a few "simple" possibilities.  He said to check first the temperature switch mentioned above, second both fan relays.  Then if it didn't correct the problem that it would likely be the ECU or "brain" of the car.  It's somewhere behind the console of the car and I have yet to locate the actual spot where to find it, but I've seen pics of the unit itself and it's just a bolt-in and then plug-in repair...but I've got to find it first.  I've seen them on ebay for anywhere from $15 used to $90 for a new aftermarket one.  If you know where it's located in the console...let me know.  Hope this is useful to you.

There is a temp sensor for fan located on motor .this maybe bad or could be fan relay.

Check the cooling fan switch. Located on top of water outlet housing on top of engine.

It turns on fan according to temperature. For photos go to advanceautoparts.com and input car info. Also they have a troubleshooting section within their web site.
