A few months ago my Cabrio had an intermittent problem and would not start. When I turned the key in the ignition NOTHING happened. No clicking sound, nothing but silence. After 2-3 times trying the car would start and I may go for 2-3 weeks without a problem. On Feb 1 the car would not start after trying 10-12 times so I had it towed to the VW dealership. Battery is only one year old and they check that and all other systems and told me no problem. They asked me history and I advised the car was in front end collision and had repair to front end July, 2006. They told me I probably had problem with the grounds to the ignition module since all other systems checked okay. They cleaned the five main grounds and sent me on my way. Three weeks later same problem and back to dealership where they replaced the starter. Upon picking up car after new starter- it would NOT start. The service mgr started it 14 out of 15 tries and told me I had to drive it until the problem got worse. A week later car won't start. I sit in car and try to listen for any sounds when trying to start. Nothing. I tried to start it 15 times. On two occasions the car tried to start and made a sound then just would not turn over. On 8 occasions it wouldn't start and didn't make any sounds. The other times it started. A couple of times it sounded like it was really struggling to start and finally did. PLEASE HELP. I love this little convertible and want to keep it but I need reliable transportation to get to work. Thanks, smiley

Not an expert but had a problem like this with a chevrolet blazer and it turned out to be the key ignition switch. Not familiar with this vw but thought I might mention it.

Hi Smiley.....I too have a V/W but it's Passat S/W...1995 purchased in 1996....only 56,500 miles and the starting problem has been getting worse in the last couple months. I'm in the process of looking for a new car but worry about whether or not it will start when it comes to trade-in. I too was computerized diagnosed by V/W and told nothing was wrong a couple years ago when the problem wasn't as bad as now. Did you ever check out the starter switch that someone suggested and if so did it work for you? It seems that the more I stop and start again the harder to start the car like it's overheated or something. Just curious if you problem was solved as it might give me clue as to what needs to be done. Thanks
