    1992 Accord Transmission problems

Last friday night my son was driving back from college and he called explaining what seemed to be a slipping transmission. He said it went to 7,000 at 40 mph. Of course I told him to pull over and check the fluid. When he said it was full I started to worry. 2 hours from home!

I told him to fill up and use 1st and 2nd knowing it would be easier to move the car in those gears but eat gas. He said after a while he was able to use D3 and got the car home.

Once I started driving it I noticed it is not your typical constant slipping trans though. Some days it is fine, others it seems to "pop" out of 3rd or 4th gear and slip.

Last weekend it was fine both days. I added sea foam and drove it a while, then changed the fluid and added some trans-x.

Then Monday I drove it to work and it upshifted fine but when in D4 and letting off the gas it seemed to slow down rather than coast and felt choppy only off the gas. Then on the way home it went nuts slipping out of what I felt was 3rd at the time. Had to pull ver and let traffic pass on a hill, then used 1st and 2nd to drive the rest of the way.

I have been reading posts all over the internet and I don't see any flashing D. Today I took it for a ride and it seemed fine so I disconnected the top solenoid wire harness. The D light came on flashing but seemed to drive fine. Then reconnected the top wire and unplugged the lower solenoid. It left me with what I am guessing 2nd and 3rd gear by the rpm/speed that I noted. After reconnecting it I drove home and just as I got close it started doing it again. It seems to want to downshift from 3rd to 2nd and slips like crazy. It could be heat related too. It seems to come and go. So I am ruling out clutches which would slip all the time.

Can it still be the TCM even without any lights coming on?

I did check the ECU code and it comes up 15. I fixed that issue 2 years ago. And can't get the code to clear by pulling either the ECU or Hazard fuse for a short period.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Steve

sounds like the 4th clutches r slipping       u said u changed the filter    the filter is inside the tras  u have to take the trans our & apart to replace the filter

    transman,

    Thanks for the reply

I changed the fluid not the filter. And when I drove it last the problem seemed to be between 2nd and 3rd. As if it couldn't make up it's mind what gear it wanted to be in. While in the shifting range where it could be high rpm 2nd or low rpm 3rd, it revs up. If I let off the gas it seems to drop into 3rd but then when I accelerate it wants to downshift but revs up.

And the thing that makes me think it is TCM or valvle body related is it is not constant. It can go a few days fine then act up.

as if it was none mechanical...Very strange

u dont see TCM problems with the hondas    if its the vb   then the trans has to come out % the trans will have to come completly apart   have u check for codes ?    u may want to pull off all the solenoids  & take off the rubber gaslet off & clean out the screens then blow into the feed & exhaust holes then put them back on & road  test   but i think that your clutches r burnt

    Re: 1992 Accord Transmission problems

A burnt clutch, wrong codes and maybe a battery that needs to be replaced was the problem. You just need to check all your <a href="http://www.autopartsdeal.com/honda/parts.html"]honda parts[/a] and replace what you need to but if you don't know what's the right thing to do, bring it up to a trusted mechanic.

    Re: 1992 Accord Transmission problems

The problem is that Honda does not correct the design, but fixes/replaces it with the same defective parts and it fails again. Just be sure you will be getting original Honda Accord parts in your dealers.
