2000 Cadillac DeVille - Check gas cap warning

Check gas cap warning showed up on display and a short time later the check engine light came on. The cap looks good and I have tried taking the cap off and putting back on again but the warning reappears again after I reset display. Any ideas what the problem could be? Also is there a way too reset check engine light on this year of Cadillac without using a code reader?

Re: 2000 Cadillac DeVille - Check gas cap warning

All new cares work on a close vented system for emission control. The fuel tank is vented through a line to the vent cannister which in turn filters the vented fuel and introduces it into the engine. When the check fuel cap is indicated it usually means that the cap is loose or that the rubber seal on the cap is bad and needs to be replaced. However, if the warning message continues, it is likely that the tank vent line could be damaged or pulled off losing system vacumn thus duplicating the loose gas cap. You should have someone trace the line for problems. If the car has been in an accident, it is possible that the purge canister itself could have been damaged and is now leaking. This could be diagnosed if ther is a fuel smell under the hood.
