2004 Jeep Liberty Leak Detector Pump

Purchased this vehicle pre-owned 6 weeks ago with 28,900 miles. Check Engine light came on at 30,600. Scan indicated EVAP system, purge valve. Dealer diagnosed as Leak Detector Pump, no warranty coverage. Are there any other Liberty owners that have experienced this problem? What if any flexibility from dealer, mfr.?

I'm assuming the basic warranty expired sometime last year. Being a 2004, it was probably first titled sometime in 2003 which would be when the manufacturer's three-year/36,000 mile warranty goes into effect. If you were the original owner of this vehicle, you would have better leverage with the dealership and/or manufacturer assistance. All you can really do is talk nicely to the dealership's service advisor or service manager about getting some kind of assistance. There is no guarantee you will get help since the warranty is up and they are not required to give any assitance. If you did not buy the Jeep from the dealership or you are not a regular maintenance customer, then I would expect them to not offer any kind of major help. It never hurts to ask, though.

I have the same problem with my '04 Liberty.  I bought it pre-owned in '06 and the check engine light has been on and off ever since.  I just had it diagnosed and they said it was the oxygen sensor and pollution control.  So they fixed these things and less than a week later I took it back because the light came on again.  They diagnosed it again and said the lead detector pump was bad.  My warranty is up, and the mechanic wants $140 bucks to fix it.  My suggestion is that you change it yourself if you can.  All you do is loosen the fuel tank and replace the part, which is next to the fuel tank.  Seems simple enough, but might take some time.  Good luck.

I have a 2005.  Intermitent light.  Check the gas cap.  Then ignore it for a week.  First time I had the problem the shop spent over a hour on the problem and then replaced the gas cap.  Fix lasted a month or so.  If my jeep sits for a week or so, on comes the light.  Drive it for another week, and the light goes out.  System is over sensitive.  But what do I know:  I'm a school teacher.
