Hyundai's entire 2008 Veracruz line is powered by a 260-horsepower, 3.8L aluminum-block V6 and six-speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic function, which allows the driver to manually select gearshifts. An electronic all-wheel drive system normally sends the majority of engine torque to the rear wheels but can send more to the back before actual wheel slippage. It also includes an AWD Lock mode, which locks the split 50/50 front/back at low speeds-especially of use in mud, sand, or deep snow.
The engine has continuously variable intake valve timing and a variable intake system for a combination of low-rev responsiveness and high-rev power, and its steel timing chain has no scheduled maintenance. Furthermore, it has a semi-active mounting system to help reduce vibration.
The Veracruz rides on a smooth four-wheel independent suspension oriented toward comfort and handling. In front there are MacPherson struts, while a multi-link setup rounds out the rear. Stabilizer bars are used front and back for tight handling.
A long list of safety features are standard on the Veracruz, including electronic stability control, four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock, electronic brakeforce distribution, and brake assist, along with active front head restraints and front side air bags and roof-mounted side air bags. Second and third row seats have adjustable head restraints.
There are three Veracruz models-GLS, SE, and Limited-and while each has the same engine and mechanical underpinnings they span a wide range in terms of equipment. The GLS comes in at a temptingly low base price, while the SE takes on a sportier flavor and the Limited packs on the traditional luxury features along with some modern high-tech conveniences.
Inside, there's seating for seven, including a standard hideaway third seat that folds down for a completely flat cargo area. All models also have second-row seats that slide forward for easy access.
The GLS model comes with air conditioning, heated power side mirrors, power windows and locks, cruise control, remote keyless entry, a tilt/telescopic steering wheel, and a 172-watt CD/MP3 audio system with steering wheel-mounted audio controls, among other features. The SE includes larger 18-inch alloy wheels, along with a power driver's seat, a roof rack, automatic headlights, fog lamps, and a center console with cooling box, auto-dimming outside mirrors. At the top of the range, the Limited adds leather upholstery with heated seats in front, automatic climate control, a power sunroof, power-adjustable pedals, a power-adjustable steering wheel, blue-backlit scuff plates, an AC power outlet, a proximity key fob, rain-sensing wipers, and a 315-watt Infinity sound system with CD changer. Major options on the Limited include a new LG navigation system and a 605-watt Logic 7 sound system.
