2010 Toyota Matrix

2010 Toyota MatrixThe 2010 Toyota Matrix is the second year model of the second generation of this popular compact hatch. Toyota listened to the complaints and suggestions its customers had about the first version of the Matrix, and the result is a car that is a little bit bigger, a little bit easier to drive and just as useful. Toyota has simplified the engine options and trim levels for the Matrix, and grafted new body work onto what is essentially the hatchback version of their best-selling Camry sedan.

The Matrix is meant to function as an all-around small family car, but where it really excels is when it is called upon to step in as a cargo-hauling minivan replacement – with an emphasis on ‘mini’. The Matrix certainly isn’t any competition for a full-size passenger van, but in terms of being able to fill the bill as an errand runner, it does just fine. The Matrix’s rear cargo area provides 20 cubic feet behind the seats, which is on par with a good-size sedan trunk. Folding the seats forward more than doubles this room to almost 49 cubic feet, which should be more than enough to cater to most of the errands and pickups on anyone’s schedule.

The 2010 Toyota Matrix can be purchased in both front-wheel and all-wheel drive, which makes it a solid choice for anyone who has to deal with an icy winter climate. There are two different engines on tap, with the first being an inexpensive to run 1.8 liter unit that produces 132 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque. Fuel mileage for this engine is rated at a very respectable 26 miles per gallon in the city and 32 miles per gallon on the highway. A more powerful 2.4 liter motor offers 26 more horsepower and 34 more lb-ft of torque, with an accompanying fuel economy penalty. All-wheel drive is exclusively matched to the larger engine and a 4-speed automatic transmission, while the front-wheel drive versions can make use of either a 5-speed auto or manual.

The 2010 Toyota Matrix is an ultra-reliable errand runner that provides a zippy drive and great utility in a compact hatchback.
