Now is the time to buy a Lexus SC 430. Why? Because after the 2010 model year, this luxurious and sporty convertible coupe is expected to be shelved.

Launched in the early 1990s as the SC 300 and SC 400, the Lexus SC 430 is “one of the first modern production vehicles to popularize a retractable-hardtop design,” so claims Lexus.

For 2010, Lexus didn’t change much from its 2009 model except for adding integrated turn signals into the side mirrors and a more convenient open-and-close button for the hard top.

In the past two decades, the Lexus SC has been lauded as an overall good buy for a sporty convertible coupe with its relatively low price, sexy exterior, quality craftsmanship, smooth and quick performance and luxury interior. But does it compete with other high-priced models such as the Cadillac XLR, Mercedes-Benz SL, Porsche 911 Carrera, Jaguar XK and BMW’s 6 Series? Yes and no.

The Lexus SC 430’s V8 engine certainly does not match its competition in power, agility and handling. Still, the 2010 Lexus SC 430 is a capable sports coupe with all the luxury-minded amenities one would expect from Lexus.

2010 Lexus SC 430 Exterior

Outside, the 2010 Lexus SC 430 has a unique look within its segment. The pointy nose, curvy side lines, low roof and bootylicious back side with slight rear spoiler make for a sleek ride. All in all, the look has elegance and grace. Plus, the 2010 Lexus SC 430 does not look like a convertible from the outside as its retractable hard top is so cleverly integrated.

2010 Lexus SC 430 Interior

Inside, the 2010 Lexus SC 430 is truly a luxurious sports coupe. We road tested the Pebble Beach Edition, which was unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Lexus Fashion Preview. This limited edition interior features two-toned, black-and-ecru, saddle-stitched leathers. Lovely, Lexus!

But beyond mere design, the 2010 Lexus SC 430 is roomy enough even for big and tall folks. My burly husband, who is six feet tall, says he “didn’t feel cramped at all” in the Lexus SC 430.

Lexus says the SC 430’s plush interior “took inspiration from high-end, custom-made yachts.” Our road test Pebble Beach model did remind me of the yachting crowd with its penchant for natural materials like leather, wood trim and hand stitching. In fact, leather and wood trims are featured on the doors, arm rests, console and even front seat belts.

The driver’s cockpit is certainly sport with its handsome gauges and wood-and-leather trimmed steering wheel. However, I didn’t find the central console to be as pleasing as it could be. The sleek black plastic that covers the infotainment system seems rather tired as does the matte silver finishes on the climate and audio control cluster below.

And, I’m not enamored with the flip-up cup holders and lack of niches for mobile devices. Still, the 2010 Lexus SC 430 has everything you’d desire in a luxury sport couple including power seats, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, premium audio system and standard navigation system.

The one big problem with the interior of the 2010 Lexus SC 430 is the tiny back seats. We put our six-year-old daughter in the back for a short drive and even she complained about the lack of leg and head room. Of course, most convertible sport coupe buyers aren’t looking for a family-sized car, so the back seats end up being used for storage rather than people.

Speaking of cargo, the SC 430’s trunk is actually quite large given the interior’s small size. I was pleasantly surprised that the trunk could hold quite a bit of cargo, certainly enough for a weekend road trip or golf outing.

2010 Lexus SC 430 Performance

As I mentioned before, the 2010 Lexus SC 430, with its 288-hp V8, certainly isn’t the most exhilarating convertible sports coupe in its category. However, for the price (MSRP $67,505), the SC 430 is more affordable than its more performance-minded competition. (The 2010 SC 430 accelerates from 0-60 mph in just 5.8 seconds.)

My husband drove the 2010 Lexus SC 430 to Los Angeles a couple of times during out weeklong road test. He found the SC 430’s acceleration is “top notch.” While changing lanes quickly, he said the SC 430 was “effortless, smooth and practically noiseless.” And, that’s saying something for a convertible. Transmission, suspension, handling and braking all have Lexus’ signature quick, smooth, graceful and noiseless attributes.

2010 Lexus SC 430 Safety

The 2010 Lexus SC 430 has lots of advanced safety equipment such as a supplemental restraint system (front air bags, side air bags and front knee airbags). The SC 430 also comes with anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, electronic stability control (ESC), traction control, an adaptive front lighting system, daytime running lights, standard fog lamps and high intensity discharge headlights with auto levelers.

2010 Lexus SC 430 Trim Levels, Packages & Options

The 2010 Lexus SC 430 comes in one trim level. Standard features include automatic-tilt steering wheel (when ignition is turned off) with memory, 10-way power adjustable heated seats, dual automatic climate control, a Mark Levinson audio system, a voice-activated navigation system with tilting screen and Bluetooth connectivity.

Still thinking about buying the 2010 Lexus SC 430? This convertible hard top is definitely an overall good buy for its sexy design, graceful performance and over-the-top luxury features.
