I have had the list of the top selling cars in America in June 2009 sitting on my desktop for a couple of weeks. I finally had the opportunity to review the list and offer you some comments on what’s happening out in the top 20 marketplace.

In order of ranking in June 2009 the Ford F-Series* came out on top followed by the Toyota Camry, Chevrolet Silverado, Honda Accord, Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Nissan Altima, Dodge Ram Pickup, Ford Fusion, Honda CR-V, Chevrolet Impala, Ford Escape, Chevrolet Malibu, Ford Focus, Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Sonata, Honda Odyssey, Toyota Tacoma, GMC Sierra and the Jeep Wrangler

It was a good month for Ford as it claws to the top with the F-Series, with the added bonus of the quick-selling Fusion and Escape also making the list. In my opinion, Ford will surpass GM shortly as the top U.S. automaker.

With both the Ford F-Series and the Chevy Silverado sitting in the top 5 it is a bit of a surprise that the Dodge Ram is relegated to 9th on the list, especially after being recently updated. On the positive side for the Ram is that it firmly sits third in pickup sales. Its closest competitor is the Toyota Tacoma that sold about 40,000 less trucks this year. Also, the Ram has suffered less of a year-over-year sales decrease than either the F-Series or Silverado.

While truck sales are definitely off this year, it is reported that a number of dealers are hurting for stock. They are coming up short in inventory for crew cabs and short bed base trucks due to production slow downs or stoppages over the last several months. A local Chevrolet dealer I recently spoke to thinks he will be out of trucks on his lot before the end of the month.

A pleasant surprise for the Chrysler family was that the Jeep Wrangler broke the top 20 surpassing their own Cherokee.

And who says that domestic cars do not sell? U.S. brands account for 10 of the top 20 in June.

*F-Series sales totals include heavy-duty models. When only light-duty trucks are counted, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 outsold the Ford F-150 in June.
