Scion xB Review
By Valerie Mellema

Review:

The Scion xB is a compact car designed to compete with the likes of the Nissan Versa, the Mazda MAZDA3, Chevrolet HHR and the Pontiac Vibe. For 2009, the Scion sees no changes at all, after the massive redesign of the previous model year. The xB is available with a single engine and two choices of transmission. Either a manual or an automatic transmission can be chosen for use with the 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, which produces 158 hp.

The 2009 Scion xB features a number of customization options for driver's enjoyment. In fact, customization is the most touted feature of the Scion lineup and numerous upgrades and options are available through the Toyota dealer of your choice. In addition, you will find that the Scion xB offers numerous safety enhancements and options, including ABS, traction control and an antiskid system. A DVD system and a navigation system are options for the interior. For those seeking a fun, sporty wagon to drive, the xB offers a considerable number of benefits.

2009 Scion xB Performance

The xB is very fast off the starting line, though top end speeds are limited. In addition, while there is plenty of power for around town driving, those needing to pass on the highway may find the situation problematic. The automatic transmission operates smoothly for the most part, though some harsh downshifting will be noticed. The manual transmission is slow and feels unresponsive to many drivers. If fuel economy is your concern, the xB comes in around the middle of the pack. The manual transmission averages 23 mpg, while the automatic transmission reduces that average to about 20 mpg.

While the xB is a bit sturdier than other options on the market, it does suffer from marked body lean during fast turns. In addition, the steering wheel has a flighty, unresponsive feel to it at times. However, it is easy to turn and maneuver in restricted urban areas and the braking is powerful at all times. The ride quality is firm, but not as enjoyable as other models available in the same class and any road defect is transferred to the cabin.

Noise is usually not a problem in the interior, though large potholes and bumps can produce noise. Wind noise and road noise are omnipresent, though only loud at highway speeds. Finally, engine noise is always present, though it has a refined tone and does not sound as ragged as other 4-cylinder engines on the market.

2009 Scion xB Interior

The Scion xB may not be marked with luxury materials, but it does come in pretty high in the class for comfort and quality. The fit of all cabin components is also excellent, with no annoying squeaks or rattles. However, it should be noted that the interior does make use of a very large amount of hard plastic, with little padding or softer touches. The central gauge cluster will take some getting used to; the speedometer is not in the direct line of sight for the driver, but is located just above it. Audio and HVAC controls are easily accessed by all drivers, though the addition of the navigation system can make things complicated.

The front seats provide adequate space, but no more. Taller drivers will certainly feel the pinch sitting behind the Scion's steering wheel. That said, the seats are comfortable and supportive, providing comfort for long driving stints. The rear seats are spacious, even for adults. Moving the front seats all the way back does not lessen the comfort provided, either.

Cargo room on the 2009 Scion xB is nice. The rear seatback splits and folds down to help add more storage and the under-floor storage compartment in the back of the vehicle is a nice touch. There are also several storage areas and cubbyholes built into the main cabin for even better storage options.

2009 Scion xB Safety Features

The 2000 Scion xB offers several safety enhancements, including dual front airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, brake assist, 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and an antiskid system.

Summary

The 2009 Scion xB, while not revamped for the new model year, does offer some surprising benefits, especially in terms of interior comfort. It also provides better than average power for around town driving. However, it does suffer from middling fuel economy and somewhat poor handling. On average, the xB is a great choice for a daily driver, or for a new driver.
