The 2009 Pontiac Vibe is a four-door wagon that competes with models such as the Scion xB, the Mazda MAZDA3, Toyota Matrix and the Dodge Caliber. The 2009 model year marks many changes for the Vibe, including the return of sport models, as well as all-wheel drive versions. In addition, the Vibe gets a facelift this year, offering a new look for consumers.
The 2009 Pontiac Vibe is available in base (1.8), GT and all-wheel drive versions. All models make use of two engine and transmission options. Base models use a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 132 hp, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission. The GT version makes use of a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 158 hp, mated to the same two transmissions. All-wheel drive Vibes make use of the 2.4-liter engine.
The Vibe also offers several safety and convenience upgrades for the new model year, including ABS, OnStar and antiskid systems. The Vibe is geared to appeal to a younger crowd, as well as consumers with children who want a sportier, fun vehicle to use as a daily driver.
2009 Pontiac Vibe Performance
The Pontiac Vibe offers adequate acceleration with the manual transmission, though the automatic transmission is somewhat slower off the mark. The 2.4-liter engine offers better speed off the mark and more power during passing on the highway. The manual transmission shifts smoothly and the automatic transmission is not marked by harsh downshift requirements during passing. The Vibe gets moderate scores for fuel economy. The 2.4-liter engine averages 21 mpg in-city, though a manual transmission kicks that to 29 mpg for highway driving.
The Vibe offers quality handling, but may be disappointing for consumers seeking a sportier experience. The GT offers a more sporty drive, thanks to the stiffer suspension. However, the vehicle does have a propensity to wander in crosswinds during highway driving. Engine noise is considerable at moderate to high RPM ranges with both engine types, and road noise is omnipresent, as well. Wind noise is substantial at highways speeds.
The base model offers a firm ride, while the GT model is so firm that bumps can be felt very well. Regardless, both models offer a feeling of stability and safety on the road, regardless of the pavement type or quality.
2009 Pontiac Vibe Interior
The interior of the Vibe is somewhat disappointing. It is predominantly hard plastic, which gives it a cheap feel. The fabric used for the seats is nice, but not top quality. In addition, the silver paint surrounding the dash seems a touch out of place. Driver gauges are located deep within the dashboard, making it somewhat difficult to read them at times. Additionally, HVAC and audio controls are located slightly out of reach of the driver, forcing a look away from the road to adjust them.
The front seats feel closed in and comfortable, though somewhat isolated from the rest of the car, due to the cockpit design. The seats are comfortable and supportive during all day driving, as well. Legroom and headroom are more than sufficient for any occupant. However, the view out of the rear is partially obscured by thick C-pillars. The rear seats are large enough for adults, but the legroom is somewhat restricted. The seat, itself, is somewhat hard and uncomfortable.
Cargo room is more than ample. The rear seats fold flat, helping to improve the room available in the back cargo area. Bulky items may be difficult to fit through the rear aperture. In addition, the cabin features several generous storage compartments and a larger than average glove box.
2009 Pontiac Vibe Safety Features
The Vibe does offer a few basic safety features, though it does not come in best in class. Daytime running lights, antilock disc brakes, a tire pressure monitoring system and an antiskid system are all standard. Additionally, side curtain airbags, dual front airbags and front side airbags are also standard. The NHTSA rated the Vibe with 4's and 5's in their crash test ratings. All impact tests received 5 out of 5, except side impact for the rear passenger, which received 4 out of 5.
Summary
The 2009 Pontiac Vibe comes to the table with a new look and some new features to tempt consumers. One of the better things about the Vibe is the price, making it a good choice for cost-conscious consumers. However, the drawbacks to the Vibe are present and must be considered prior to a purchase.
