The Mitsubishi Eclipse has long been a staple of the performance car class. In fact, it has become synonymous with performance and power at a modest price. The 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse competes against models such as the Honda Civic Si, the MINI Cooper, Pontiac Solstice and the Nissan 350Z. For the new model year, the Eclipse receives another update to the front and rear fascias, bringing a bit more curve to this voluptuous car.
The 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse is available in several varieties. The GS and GT trim are the most common, though the Spyder convertible can also be found. The GS uses a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 162 hp, while the GT version makes use of a more powerful 3.8-liter V6, producing 265 hp. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard for the GS trim, while the GT gets a 6-speed manual. A 4-speed automatic transmission is optional for the GS, while a 5-speed automatic is offered for the GT.
For performance and power, as well as better handling, the GT is the best choice. However, the GS is more affordable. Both models feature things like ABS and front side airbags. Upgraded audio systems (the Sun and Sound Package) are available, as are other upgrades.
2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse Performance
The GS offers enough get up and go for around town use, while the GT offers the best power and performance for any application. The GS should be paired with the manual transmission for the best performance. Even so, it can require considerable throttle to truly move. The GT version makes the run from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.5 seconds, while the GS requires about 9 seconds for the same run. For fuel economy, the GS is able to attain about 20 mpg, while the GT comes in around 18 mpg. Manual transmission versions are able to get better fuel mileage than their automatic brethren.
The best part about driving an Eclipse is the cornering capabilities the car offers. While the handling is not as sporty as it could be, all models handle curves like a champ. Road grip is optimal, and body lean is almost negligible. The only drawback to driving a GT is the torque steer evident under hard acceleration, though this is minimal. All Eclipse models suffer from a relatively large turning radius, making them somewhat less than nimble in tight urban areas.
All Eclipse models feature a firm suspension, though the tuning of the GT is somewhat firmer than that of the GS. This equates to some harsh impacts when hitting potholes or other obstructions on rough road surfaces.
2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse Interior
The interior of the Eclipse (both GT and GS) is marked by substantial use of hard plastic panels. Very few padded surfaces exist. While the superficial feel is one of sleek design, actual use shows the flimsiness of the construction. The central gauge cluster is logically laid out and can be seen easily in most lighting conditions, though some of the controls are somewhat out of reach for the driver. The audio controls are separated from the display unit, but can be navigated with a bit of familiarity.
The front seats offers plenty of legroom, but the headroom is somewhat lacking, due to the sloping design of the roof, making it problematic for taller drivers and passengers. The seats are excellent, providing plenty of support and comfort for long drives or short hops. The body style does not lend itself to seeing out the back or rear side windows. Thick roof pillars block the view to a surprising degree.
The rear seats are tight and cramped; adults will find that squeezing in here is quite difficult. Children will be the most comfortable in this area. Cargo space also suffers on the Eclipse, with a very small footprint in the rear (the upgraded sound system also eats up space).
2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse Safety Features
A wide range of safety features provides protection on the Eclipse. You will find dual front airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, daytime running lights, 4-wheel antilock brakes, front side airbags, front side curtain airbags and more. An antitheft system, fog lights and an anti skid system are also available.
Summary
The Eclipse is all about looks when all is said and done. The vehicle offers very little in the way of cargo space, very little passenger capacity and can be quite noisy on the road. However, the performance and looks factor may be enough to sway you.
