The MINI Cooper has been redesigned for the new model year, featuring a new design for the convertible model, as well as high-performance models available. The MINI Cooper competes with the Scion tC, the Mazda MX-5, the Volkswagen GTI and the Pontiac Solstice, among others. For 2009, the MINI Cooper will be available in two hatchback flavors, as well as the convertible style.
All MINI Cooper models are available in standard and S trim levels. All models make use of the same basic engine, a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder putting out 118 hp. The S trim level provides a turbocharger that kicks the power up to 172 hp. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual transmission, as well as a 6-speed automatic transmission. The new John Cooper Works edition of the MINI Cooper offers 208 hp, as well as a 6-speed manual transmission (not optional), sport tuned suspension, larger tires, high-performance braking system and sport exhaust.
The MINI Cooper comes with a wide range of accessories and upgrades. A hands free cell phone system is available, as is a sunroof and other options. An antiskid system, ABS and traction control are some of the available safety features on the MINI.
2009 MINI Cooper Performance Reviewed
The 2009 MINI Cooper offers plenty of power for around town use. The base engine is more than sufficient for in-city driving and will get you off the mark in decent time. However, taking the base model out of the city sheds a different light on the situation. The 118-hp engine struggles with hills and requires a bit of downshifting.
Of course, the S model and the John Cooper Works model kick the power up quite a bit. Both models suffer from turbo lag at low speeds, though this is a transitory issue. Both models have impressive power in the city and tackle hills easily. The John Cooper Works model does suffer from a bit of torque steer, though the S model does not (it suffers from jerky shifting occasionally).
Fuel economy is a high point of any MINI Cooper model. Type S models can achieve as much as 33 mpg, while the John Cooper Works model averages about 29 mpg. Base models can achieve around 34 mpg on average, while the Clubman sees 32 mpg as an average. Ride quality is better in the Clubman, though all MINIs enjoy decent ride quality. Rough road surfaces do induce a bit of jouncing in the vehicle, though.
For quietness, the MINI Cooper gets mixed reviews. Wind noise and road noise are problematic at highway speeds, though the engine noise is usually pleasant (quite during cruising). Larger tires exacerbate the road noise issue, as well.
2009 MINI Cooper Interior Reviewed
The interior of the MINI Cooper is a wonderful thing, filled with rich fabrics, colors and textures. Solid construction and quality materials impart a luxurious feel, even though the MINI Cooper is quite affordable. Controls are large and easy to read, though they can take a bit of getting used to before reading them becomes second nature. The retro styling of the gauges may sacrifice function for form. Audio and climate controls are easily accessed from the driver's position, but take a bit to locate, due to their small markings.
The front seats of the MINI Cooper offer tons of room for even the tallest driver. Seats are more than comfortable, featuring the bolstering needed for long driving comfort. Visibility is also quite good from the front in all models. The rear seats provide limited legroom for adults, though headroom is not at a premium. Foot space is also limited in the back. The best option is to leave the rear for the kids and let the grownups sit up front
Cargo room in the MINI Cooper is a bit restricted. The small space in the rear is well designed and can be used quite easily; it's just small. The rear seats do fold, increasing the amount of usable space to an extent. Interior storage areas are a bit limited, though the two-tier glove box and large map pockets are nice touches.
2009 MINI Cooper Safety Features
For safety and security on the road, you will find a tire pressure monitor, an antiskid system, dual front airbags, side curtain airbags, front side airbags, 4-wheel antilock disc brakes and an antitheft system on board.
Summary
The 2009 MINI Cooper is an excellent vehicle in any incarnation, providing plenty of style and performance. If power is high on your list of demands, opt for the S or John Cooper Works model.
