The 2009 Mazda B Series enters the new model year with very little change from the previous model year. The pickup series is built on the same platform as the Ford Ranger, differing mostly in exterior appearance and some features. The truck is available in two trim levels, the B2300 and the B4000 Cab Plus 4. The B2300 makes use of a 2.3-liter 4-cylinder, putting out 143 hp, while its larger brother uses a 4.0-liter V6, which provides 207 hp. The B4000 is the only model available with 4-wheel drive.
Both the B2300 and the B4000 can be equipped with a manual transmission or an automatic transmission and both include several enhancements and safety features, such as ABS. However, Mazda has chosen not to provide other enhancements, such as side airbags or traction control, following the theme of the Ford Ranger.
2009 Mazda B Series Performance
For takeoff power, the B2300 is merely adequate. The B4000 has much more power from a stop. Both the automatic and the manual transmissions offer adequate operation, though neither provides any sort of "wow" factor. For fuel economy, the B Series comes in with 15 mpg as an average; though the larger engine combined with an automatic transmission can reduce that figure somewhat. This puts the truck a bit below other small pickups on the market.
Steering and handling in the B Series is more than adequate, feeling very solid even in tight turns. Unlike many other pickups on the market, body lean is moderate during even tight turns and braking is more than adequate. Ride quality is good in both the B2300 and the B4000, with decent bump absorption throughout both models. Some rear end looseness is noticeable, but this is normal on all pickups.
The B Series also receives decent marks for quietness. While some class leaders are quieter than either the B2300 or the B4000, the cabin does not suffer from tremendous amounts of wind noise or road noise.
2009 Mazda B Series Interior
The interior of the B Series is a study in solidity. While you certainly won't find top quality luxury components, the interior is solid, serviceable and quiet. If you are seeking refinement and ultra-comfort, you should seek elsewhere on the market, but the B Series does provide a utilitarian level of comfort throughout the interior and makes an excellent work truck.
The gauges are laid out in a convenient manner, are illuminated well and all controls can be easily reached from the driver's position. The audio and HVAC controls are easy to reach and use, while the dash is also utilitarian in both design and controls offered. For head and legroom, the front seats offer adequate space for all but the tallest people, though some drivers and passengers may wish for more side support during turns. The view out the back window is not compromised by headrests, though the thick roof pillars do block some of the view.
The B4000 is the only version to offer rear seats; these are very small and the rear doors cannot be opened if the front doors are closed. The jump seats are adequate for children, though the area is best used for storage of needed items. Full-grown adults will find riding in the rear seats almost untenable.
Cargo room on the B Series is excellent, with several bed sizes from which to choose. If you anticipate needed additional cargo space, opt for the B4000 and make use of the rear seats for cargo use. Interior storage is sparse, other than a glove box.
2009 B Series Safety Features
Following the lead of the Ford Ranger, the B Series offers minimal safety features. Standard options on the B Series include dual front airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system and antilock brakes. Optional equipment, including a day/night mirror, an antitheft system and a compass are available as add-ons.
Summary
The B Series is an excellent choice for anyone who finds themselves in need of a quality work truck. With excellent storage capacity and a utilitarian design, both the B2300 and the B4000 can be put to a wide variety of uses. While neither compares to the class leaders in terms of powertrain options, luxury options or size, the value here is found in the vehicle's price and dependability. Following the Ranger's example, the B Series offers excellent operation, and excellent value that will put you in good stead for years to come.
