Dodge Durango Review
By Valerie Mellema

Review:

For 2009, the Dodge Durango gets a new model added to the lineup -- a hybrid model that has long been anticipated. Other than this addition, the SUV receives no updates or changes from the previous model year. The Durango is available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations, though the hybrid model is available only with all-wheel drive. In addition to the hybrid model, three trim levels are offered for the conventional gasoline powered vehicle. SE is the base trim level, followed by the SLT trim level. The Limited trim level is the most luxurious and offers the most standard options.

The SE and SLT models are available only with a 3.7-liter V6 engine producing 210 hp, while the Limited trim level makes use of a 4.7-liter V8 that features 303 hp. An optional engine for the SLT and Limited trims is a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 producing 356 hp. Hybrid Durango models feature a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 that produces 385 hp when paired with the electric motor. Towing is limited to 8950 lbs for gasoline engines and 6,000 lbs for the hybrid model. The V6 models use a 4-speed automatic, V8 versions use a 5-speed transmission and hybrids make use of a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

2009 Dodge Durango Performance Reviewed

The V6 engine is a terrible choice if you want power. The engine is capable of 0 – 60 mph times of over 12 seconds only, making it one of the slowest vehicles in its class for acceleration. The V8 engines offer increased performance, though even these are somewhat sluggish on takeoff, due to the Durango's weight. Hybrid models offer somewhat better takeoff power, though the switch between electric motor and gas engine produces pronounced lag. Transmission operation on all models is smooth and well executed.

Fuel economy is another area in which the Durango suffers. While the hybrid is able to attain an average of 21 mpg, gasoline engines fall far short of this mark and actually fall short of other SUVs in the same class. In addition, all models offer a quiet ride, with wind noise only noticeable at highway speeds.

The steering on the new Durango is somewhat light due to the power steering system, while the vehicle is slow to react to any sharp change in direction. Braking is firm and confident on all models. The hybrid model also suffers from a lack of road feel, even though it uses a non-hydraulic system. The 2009 Durango does offer one of the most comfortable rides in its class. Gasoline engine models offer a quiet, comfortable ride without marked side roll, though the hybrid model is somewhat less comfortable.

2009 Dodge Durango Interior

The Durango's interior makes use of lower quality plastics throughout, though it does not appear cheap, as does the Dodge Nitro. The patterning and fabrics used are understated and quality, adding to the feel of the interior. All controls are easily accessed from the driver's seat, and the gauges are easy to read. The central cluster gives immediate access to all required information and the HVAC and radio controls are logical, well placed and look nice, as well.

The front seats offer a tremendous amount of legroom and headroom and even have sufficient firmness for comfort on long hauls. The view from the driver's seat can be obstructed by thick A pillars, as well as thick C pillars in the rear. The second row seating is comfortable for adults and children alike, while the third row seating can only accommodate adults for short trips. Entering the third row seats is somewhat restrictive, making it a better location for children than adults.

The cargo room offered by the Durango is tremendous. Both second and third row seats fold flat to the floor, increasing the already considerable amount of space in the rear of the vehicle. The Durango also offers a number of interior storage areas spread throughout the cabin for convenience.

2009 Dodge Durango Safety Features

The Durango offers a modicum of standard safety features, including dual front airbags, standard antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, an anti skid system, tire pressure monitoring system and side curtain airbags. A rear obstacle detection system can be added to the SLT and Limited trim levels.

Summary

The 2009 Dodge Durango suffers from poor acceleration, sloppy handling and low fuel economy. However, it does feature one of the best rides in its class, tremendous towing capacity and amazing amounts of storage. The vehicle is an ideal choice for those who want comfort and the ability to tow almost anything.
