Dodge Challenger Review
By Valerie Mellema

Review:

The 2009 Dodge Challenger evokes an accurate image of the muscle cars of yesteryear, living up to its namesake. The Challenger enjoys the addition of several other models for the 2009 model year, as well as other enhancements. For 2009, SE and R/T models have been added, giving a total of three trim levels including the SRT8 platform. The SE offers a 3.5-liter V6 engine, producing 250 hp, while the R/T enjoys a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 producing 372 hp. Of course, the SRT8 offers a 6.1-liter Hemi V8, capable of making 425 hp. A 4-speed automatic transmission is available in the SE trim, while the R/T trim level uses a 5-speed automatic transmission, or it can be equipped with a 6-speed manual. The SRT8 uses either a 5-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual transmission.

All models are rear-wheel drive and do not offer front-wheel or all-wheel drive options. Additionally, every model is capable of seating five passengers. Chrysler's UConnect system is new for 2009, and introduces a 30 GB hard drive and wireless communications benefits. Additionally, keyless engine start and other upgrades are available, as well.

The SE trim level begins at $21,320, while the R/T comes in at $29,320. The SRT8 tops out at $39,320, though prices will obviously rise with the number of accessories added to the trim level.

2009 Dodge Challenger Performance

The SE offers adequate takeoff power, though it suffers at higher RPM ranges. The R/T offers more-than ample power at all engine speeds, though the addition of the manual transmission makes it more powerful. Finally, the SRT8 is an incredibly powerful vehicle, capable of 0 – 60 speeds in less than 5 seconds.

However, if you are seeking better fuel economy, the Challenger is not the way to go. No model offers fuel consumption savings, though the SE comes closest. The SRT8 tops out at an average of 17 mpg on the highway. The R/T trim level offers better fuel economy, though by no means is it a car known for fuel savings.

The Challenger enjoys a nice ride quality across all trim levels. Bumps and potholes are noticeable but not horrible, while even rough roads do not seem to result in poor ride quality. Like other Dodge/Chrysler products, the Challenger suffers from too much power steering assistance. However, the vehicle is still responsive. Braking is substantial and quick, while body lean is not pronounced, except in very aggressive turning situations.

Engine noise is the most noticeable sound intruding into the cabin, though all models suffer from road and exhaust noise. Wind noise is noticeable, but not markedly so, on all models, as well.

2009 Dodge Challenger Interior

The interior of the Challenger is marked by plastic. In fact, it is the one omnipresent element in the cabin. However, while the plastic may appear cheap, it is thick enough and enjoys enough texturing to avoid a bad reputation. Chrome, carbon fiber, suede and other elements are available as add-ons to help alleviate the look of the base interior.

All gauges are recessed deeply into the dash and can be difficult to see at times. However, most controls are easily reached from the driver's seat. If the navigation option is chosen, expect the audio controls to be absorbed by the unit. This is not a detriment on the Challenger, as it is on many other models, though.

The front seats are surprisingly spacious, capable of providing comfortable seating for even the tallest drivers. Seating is also comfortable for all-day driving stints. However, rear visibility is reduced due to the sloping roof design. Rear seats suffer from low headroom and little legroom, though the space is comparable to other models on the market. The trunk is impressive in space and in opening size, though few storage compartments exist in the cabin.

2009 Dodge Challenger Safety

Dodge designed quite a few safety features into the 2009 Dodge Challenger. Drivers will find dual front airbags, side curtain airbags, front side airbags, tire pressure monitoring and four-wheel disc brakes on all models. Antilock brakes are available as an upgrade, as are antiskid and brake assist systems. All models enjoy an antitheft system, as well. NHTSA ratings are not available for the 2009 model.

Summary

While the 2009 Dodge Challenger may not be designed to save fuel, it does come through as a muscle car, in an exemplary fashion. In fact, many consumers and testing companies have rated the Challenger better than the comparable Ford Mustang. A comparison with the 2010 Camaro will have to wait for a few months longer, though.
