The 2009 Dodge Caliber returns with similar MPG ratings to last year. All-wheel drive models have been discontinued, which improves the overall average fuel efficiency for the vehicle's lineup. Compared to other affordable small cars, the Dodge Avenger remains competitive in overall MPG, but more efficient competing models are available. The car comes in four vehicle trims – SE. SXT, R/T and SRT4
MPG: 2009 Dodge Caliber SE and SXT - The SE and SXT – the entry-level trims for the 2009 Dodge Caliber – both come standard with a 1.8-liter inline-4 engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. This setup delivers 148 horsepower and 125 lb-ft. of torque. The base engine also delivers the best fuel efficiency for this year's Caliber, offering 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.
An optional automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT) is available for both the SE and SXT. The CVT adjusts engine output during different speeds and accelerations to improve engine performance over a variety of driving scenarios. The result is an increase in horsepower and minimal loss in fuel efficiency. SE and SXT models with the CVT deliver 158 horsepower, 23 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.
