Chrysler 300-Series Review
By Valerie Mellema

Review:

Few vehicles are as markedly recognizable on the road as the Chrysler 300. The unique grille design and rigid body lines, coupled with the vehicle's above average size combine to make the 300 stand out around town or on the highway. The Chrysler 300 falls into the Large Car category and is available in several different trim levels for driver's benefit. LX, Touring, Limited, 300C and 300C SRT8 are the available trim levels on the 2009 Chrysler 300.

All trim levels are available with rear-wheel drive, though the Limited, Touring and 300C can be equipped with all-wheel drive if you so desire. Additionally, the 300 platforms make use of several different engine/transmission combinations. The LX uses a 2.7-liter V6 that produces 178 hp. The Touring and Limited versions enjoy a 3.5-liter V6 producing 250 hp. The 300C makes use of a 5.7-liter V8, which produces 359 hp. Finally, the 300C SRT8 features a 6.2-liter Hemi V8 that produces 425 hp. The 300 LX, rear-wheel drive Touring and Limited versions of the 300 use a 4-speed automatic transmission, while the other platforms mate a 5-speed automatic transmission with the various engines.

Base price for the LX is $26,665, while the 300C SRT8 tops out at $44,160. Of course, those prices will vary drastically with the addition of upgrades.

2009 Chrysler 300 Performance

The 300 comprises such a wide range of engine designations and power outputs that it can be difficult to quantify them. However, the 2.7-liter V6 is barely sufficient to pull the 300's vast bulk. The 3.5-liter V6 is adequate, providing quick response times for acceleration both in town and on the highway. Of course, the larger V8's provide substantial power and acceleration at all RPM ranges.

Fuel economy is one of the areas in which the 300 suffers. The V6 engines suffer due to the effort of pulling the vehicle, while the other engines suffer due to the power output of the engines. However, the 3.5-liter V6 engine seems to balance power and fuel consumption for the best benefits.

The 2009 Chrysler 300 enjoys comfortable handling during highway driving. However, it is not an agile vehicle and is outclassed by almost any European imports of similar size. However, it does enjoy good road grip during turns and does not suffer from excessive body lean or nose diving. Finally, the SRT8 platform provides firm handling capabilities, bringing a sporty feel to the line.

Ride quality is smooth, without excessive jouncing and none of the wallowing that is associated with similar vehicles. The ride is also surprisingly quiet, though acceleration does produce a nice, throaty roar, especially with the V8 engines. Wind noise can be somewhat pronounced at higher speeds, though it is lower than many other new model vehicles.

2009 Chrysler 300 Interior

The interior is well outfitted for comfort. Wood and chrome accents combined with padded surfaces and a limited use of plastic make for refined comfort. All gauges are easily read, and HVAC, audio controls and other functions are easily reached from the driver's position, as well.

The interior is also spacious, with plenty of front seat room. The seats are flat-bottomed, which can pose an issue during aggressive driving. Additionally, the thick pillars used in the front can reduce visibility, while the tall aft end reduces rear visibility, as well. The rear seats enjoy substantial amounts of headroom, though legroom can suffer if the front seats are moved fully aft.

The trunk is very spacious, though the 2009 Chrysler 300 suffers from a too small trunk opening, similar to other Chrysler and Dodge products. Few interior cubbies and storage areas were designed into the vehicle, making storage somewhat problematic.

2009 Chrysler 300 Safety

The 2009 Chrysler 300 does offer substantial safety features. All vehicles offer 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, dual front airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system and a theft deterrent system. Optional safety features include antiskid technology, brake assist, upgraded braking systems and rear obstacle detection systems.

Summary

The wide variety of trim levels makes the 300 a good choice for a variety of needs. While the smaller engine makes little sense, the larger V6 and V8 engines offer substantial performance. In addition, the vehicle enjoys a stable, comfortable ride, as well as considerable handling capabilities. The price for optional equipment is a bit high, making it more expensive than other options on the market, but the 300 is still an excellent choice for those seeking an entry-level luxury sedan with better-than average handling.
