Buick LaCrosse Review
By Valerie Mellema

Review:

The Buick LaCrosse is a midsize sedan, offered in three different trim levels. The hallmark of the LaCrosse is the adherence to Buick's traditional roominess. The CX, CXL and Super are the only three trim levels offered, with the CXS model being discontinued for the 2009 model year. Two engine choices are available on the LaCrosse, but only a single transmission is provided for the line. In addition, the LaCrosse offers several enhanced safety features, as well as modern technological additions in the cabin. New for 2009 is a wireless cell phone connection, as well as heated power mirrors. Rear obstacle detection is available, though not included on all models.

The CX and CXL trim levels make use of a 3.8-liter V6 engine, producing 200 hp. The Super enjoys the benefits of a 5.3-liter V8 with 300 hp. However, given the LaCrosse's bulk and weight, neither engine seems capable of producing sufficient power for highway passing and exciting performance.

2009 Buick LaCrosse Performance

The CX and CXL enjoy considerable takeoff speed, thanks to the torque from the 4-speed transmission. However, once up to highway speeds, the LaCrosse is unable to provide sufficient power for immediate passing. To harness any engine power, the driver must really use the gas pedal, reducing fuel economy. The Super, of course, offers improved performance, but still suffers from the sheer weight and bulk of the vehicle. CXL and CX models are able to provide 21 mpg during highway driving, while the larger engine of the Super reduces this by a significant amount.

Steering and handling on the LaCrosse is an interesting conundrum. Buick's power steering system makes the wheel feel too light, but the vehicle is responsive during turns. However, aggressive turning does result in nosedives, while the vehicle also suffers from body lean during even moderate turning.

The suspension offered on the LaCrosse is capable, but not sporty. Rough roads, bumps and potholes result in wallowing and swaying that can affect driving. The vehicle is quiet during most driving, though wind noise can be pronounced at higher speeds and rough roads induce considerable noise in the cabin.

2009 Buick LaCrosse Interior

The interior of the LaCrosse is comfortable but predictable. Drivers will find no luxury touches here. The vehicle is capable of seating five, though that increases to six with the addition of the front bench seat. One mark in the LaCrosse's favor is the lack of the overwhelming use of plastic in the interior that seems to mark many other American automakers, such as Dodge.

Controls are located in a logical manner and offer easy access through the central input area. All driver information is displayed through gauges immediately visible to all drivers, regardless of height. Additionally, the front seats offer considerable legroom for even the tallest drivers. The headroom does suffer from the low roofline, though. The upgrade to leather seats is preferable over the base seating, as well.

Rear legroom and headroom are sufficient, though not overwhelming. The seat is comfortable, as well, but lacks sufficient support for long drives and constitutes one of the largest complaints about the LaCrosse.

Finally, the trunk of the LaCrosse offers considerable storage space. However, like many other modern offerings, the trunk opening is too small to accommodate large or bulky items. The rear seats fold down almost completely flat, but the egress is blocked by structural support members, further reducing the usability of the trunk for large items. However, Buick did design substantial small storage areas throughout the vehicle.

2009 Buick LaCrosse Safety

The 2009 Buick LaCrosse offers many standard safety features. All models offer dual front airbags, as well as side curtain airbags. In addition, every trim level features 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, as well as a tire pressure monitoring system, daytime running lights and a theft deterrent system. An optional antiskid system and rear obstacle detection system add enhanced value. Additionally, the Buick LaCrosse performed well in most NHTSA tests. Front impact for driver and passenger received a score of 5 out of 5, while rollover resistance received a score of 4 out of 5. Side impact on the driver side earned 3 out of 5, while the same test on the passenger side earned 4 out of 5.

Summary

The Buick LaCrosse is an adequate vehicle. Designed for moderate comfort and room, the vehicle lives up to expectations, though does not exceed them. This is an excellent vehicle for driving around town, but lacks the brute power for aggressive driving on the open highway.
