CHANGE PACKAGE:
Acura RDX Review
By Valerie Mellema

Review:

The Acura RDX is a premium compact SUV that has enjoyed considerable popularity in recent years. The 2009 model offers numerous options and upgrades, without actually bringing any new body style to the table. In essence, the RDX remains much the same, offering the same single power train. However, the RDX does offer significant options and is even available with a technology package. The RDX has a base price of $33,895, though the technology package kicks that price up to $37,195. The price of that package is well worth it, as it brings the addition of the rearview camera and several other upgrades that enhance the enjoyment of owning the 2009 Acura RDX.

The technology package includes a rearview camera, a cell phone link and a new navigation system. Additionally, the RDX is available with several safety features. ABS, antiskid technology, side curtain airbags and front side airbags are all available, as is traction control. The 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine produces sufficient force to propel the SUV through most situations, while the automatic transmission offers smooth operation. While the RDX is technically a compact SUV, it does feature a 1500 lb towing capacity, as well as seating for five.

2009 Acura RDX Performance

The RDX's performance is due to the 240-hp engine and advanced transmission it houses. The turbocharger is also a significant factor. According to some sources, the RDX is capable of making the 0-60 mph run in less than 7 seconds, a not inconsiderable feat for a 4-cylinder SUV. The turbocharger does produce some lag during initial acceleration, but greatly aids in high RPM situations. The all-wheel drive keeps all four wheels powering across the pavement in all but the most severe conditions, as well. In fact, the road handling capabilities are one of the most-remarked features of the RDX.

The agility of the RDX is somewhat surprising, but seems to be due to the same firm ride that makes the RDX seem a little jumpy crossing rough patches of road. Handling seems to be very responsive, at least at road speeds, though lower speeds make the steering wheel feel a little sluggish and slow to respond. The manual shifting capabilities of the automatic transmission can compensate for the somewhat sluggish response during low speeds, though. In fuel economy, the RDX comes in lower than some other options in its class. Highway mileage is estimated at 21 mpg, while in-city driving comes in around 15.5 mpg. Braking is very responsive, though the pedal may feel somewhat soft to those unaccustomed to Acura's braking system. However, the system functions quite well.

2009 Acura RDX Interior

The RDX receives somewhat low marks for the interior. While the seating is comfortable enough, the somewhat-unrefined finish is a put off for a vehicle in this price range. Of course, the inordinate usage of plastic throughout the interior is the largest complaint. The gauge controls are nicely laid out, though some of the secondary controls are poorly defined and difficult to access. The large LCD screen is a nice touch and certainly provides more than adequate information, though it would have been nice if Acura had included more areas of information displayed through the system.

Space inside the RDX is not limited, though tall drivers will have problems getting comfortable behind the steering wheel. Rear seats provide sufficient room for tall riders to sit up straight, but the legroom is somewhat restricted and entering the back seats can be somewhat difficult.

Cargo space is definitely not limited and provides more than ample room. The folding rear seats help extend this room, as well. The 60/40 fold pattern lets the seats fold nearly flat, though they are not as convenient as the Dodge folding seat design. In addition, Acura was kind enough to add sufficient storage areas, mostly in the spacious door compartments, though the center console is large enough to support a laptop during driving.

The RDX boasts a number of additional interior amenities. The 6-disc CD changer, built-in satellite radio, built-in garage door opener, the MP3 capabilities, 8-way adjustable driver seat and 4-way adjustable passenger seat provide substantial benefits for drivers and passengers. In addition, the front seats offer powered heat for comfort, while the power sunroof and remote keyless entry are also nice additions to the model.

2009 Acura RDX Safety Equipment

The 2009 Acura RDX provides numerous safety enhancements for riders and drivers. Dual front air bags are standard on all models, as are the side curtain air bags, front side airbags and rollover deployment for the side curtain airbags. 4-wheel antilock brakes are a nice addition in class that sees just as many rear drum brake systems as true ABS. In addition, the brake assist and antiskid technology are incredibly beneficial. New for the 2009 model is the active head restraint system that Honda is implementing across both the Honda and Acura lines. The tire pressure monitoring system gives you the tire pressure of all four wheels at the touch of a button, though cold temperatures can give indeterminate readings until the air within the tires heats up through driving. In addition, the daytime running lights are a standard option that increases the vehicle's visibility while on the road.

Xenon headlights provide considerable visibility for night driving, while the fog lights are a nice touch for those times when fog may obscure the roadway. The theft deterrent system is standard on all models and provides substantial benefits.

Summary

The 2009 Acura RDX comes in with a moderate score in its class. Several factors take away from the potential offered by this compact SUV, including the interior materials, the noise level produced by tire contact with the road and several other factors. However, the RDX remains one of the best vehicles on the market for entry-level luxury SUV purchasers. The moderate cost, relatively high level of amenities and Acura's reputation for quality and durability put the 2009 RDX squarely in the middle of the compact luxury SUV category.
