CHANGE PACKAGE:
Pontiac Vibe Review
By Autotropolis Editors

Strengths:
Economical versatility; fuel economy.

Changes:
The Pontiac Vibe continues into 2008 as one front-wheel-drive hatchback model, with very little changing from the 2007 model year. The Sun and Sound Package now includes a six-disc CD changer, and a tire pressure monitor is standard. A complete redesign is expected for the 2009 model year.

Value:
The 2008 Pontiac Vibe continues to offer a youthful mix of versatility and practicality. Nearly 20 cubic feet of space resides behind the rear seat, with 54 cubic feet on hand when the rear seat is folded down. At 33 mpg on the highway (using the EPA's modified 2008 ratings), the Vibe ranks as one of the most efficient vehicles in General Motors' lineup. Reliability has been above average over its six-year run.

Overview:
The 2008 Vibe is Pontiac's entry-level vehicle, and offers a lot of character and flexibility for the price. The interior is airy, and the hatchback configuration allows for gobs of cargo capacity for the vehicle's size. For extra space, the front passenger seat folds flat. A 1.8L, 126-horsepower four-cylinder engine powers the Vibe, and it is paired to a five-speed manual transmission.

An optional four-speed automatic is an $850 option. The Vibe shares mechanicals with the Toyota Matrix, both of which are based on the Corolla platform. The Vibe is modestly equipped with standard items, which helps keep the cost of entry low. Power mirrors, air conditioning, roof rails, and a CD player are all included with the cost of the vehicle.

New for 2008 is the addition of a standard tire pressure monitor system. For just one model, the options list is extensive. Two different aluminum wheels are available, as are two upgraded stereos with Monsoon speakers. Remote keyless entry, cruise control, and power door locks and windows can be ordered as part of the Preferred Package.

Leather seats, a sunroof, satellite radio, and an alarm system are also available. For enhanced safety, anti-lock brakes, StabiliTrak, OnStar, and side air bags can be added.
