CHANGE PACKAGE:
Lexus GX Review
By Autotropolis Editors

Strengths:
Excellent reliability; comfortable cabin with room for five adults; good on-road manners with real off-road usability; strong V8 power.

Changes:
For 2008, the Lexus GX 470 sees few changes. Outside, the GX 470 gets a metallic finish on the door handles, tailgate molding, grille, and roof rack, while the taillights get a new lens treatment and the inside sees some minor trim additions.

Value:
The 2008 Lexus GX 470 faces off against vehicles like the Acura MDX and BMW X5. With standard V8 power, it proves a good buy comparably, and with proven Toyota reliability and 4x4 prowess, there's little doubt this SUV is up for anything prospective buyers might throw at it.

Overview:
The 2008 GX 470 occupies a spot in the Lexus lineup between the RX 350 compact SUV and the full-sized LX 470. Based on Toyota's venerable 4Runner, the GX 470 offers buyers all the luxury expected of a Lexus with the versatility of a truly capable off-road truck. The GX 470 comes only in one trim, but that lone model is loaded with plenty of standard luxury, convenience, and safety features. A bevy of options are also available. At the heart of the GX 470 is a 263-horsepower 4.7L V8, which delivers all of its 323 lb-ft of torque as low as 3,400 rpm.

That power is put to the road through a five-speed automatic and full-time four-wheel drive, which features a manual locking limited-slip differential. Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) and stability control oversee the entire process to ensure a safe, balanced ride at all times. Additionally, an electronic adjustable air suspension with automatic load leveling allows the driver to control ride height and lower the vehicle for easy loading. The GX 470 seats five people comfortably, and if equipped with a third-row seat can handle eight passengers. Standard interior equipment includes creature comforts like leather seating, automatic air conditioning with dual-zone climate control, HomeLink universal garage door opener, heated power seats, audio and cruise controls on the power tilt/telescopic steering wheel, and a multi-display computer with compass, altimeter, and barometer.

A six-disc, in-dash CD stereo is also standard. For those looking to go the extra mile in luxury and entertainment, several premium options fit the bill. Standalone choices include a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, XM satellite radio, and third-row seating with rear air conditioning. The GX 470 can also be outfitted for workhorse duties with a tow-hitch receiver and wiring harness, as well as Kinetic Dynamic Suspension, which has thicker stabilizer bars and hydraulic mounts for increased performance both on-road and off. Popular packages include a $3,250 Navigation & Audio Package with voice-activated DVD navigation and a Mark Levinson 14-speaker stereo with a six-disc CD/DVD player. The GX 470 features advanced front air bags for driver and passenger, as well as seat-mounted side air bags and side-curtain, roll-sensing air bags.

Anti-lock braking is standard, with brake assist and electronic force distribution.
