CHANGE PACKAGE:
Volvo S80 Review
By Autotropolis Editors

Strengths:
Lots of car for the money; loaded with safety innovations; attractive design; good power from available engines.

Changes:
Following a major redesign last year, Volvo adds a new trim level to the 2008 S80 lineup-the T6 AWD. It's an all-wheel-drive model powered by a turbocharged, 281-horsepower 3.0L inline six and it slots in between the 3.2 and the V8 AWD. The T6 AWD is priced at $42,045. Standard now on the V8 is a premium leather interior, as well as Volvo's keyless start and security system, Personal Car Communicator (PCC). Outside, the V8 gets brushed aluminum door moldings, and heated rear seats are now available in the Climate Package.

Value:
The 2008 Volvo S80 is an excellent choice for those looking for first-class refinement, a bevy of innovative safety features, luxury galore, solid power options, and a competitive price across the range. The 3.2 gives efficiency-minded buyers a great option, while the Yamaha-built V8 delivers smooth power across the rev range, and the new turbocharged inline six-cylinder presents buyers with a smart blend of both.

Overview:
Volvo's S80 is getting on in years, but the 2007 redesign did much to keep the model youthful and aggressive looking. When compared to class rivals from Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and Acura, the 2008 S80 gives all the bang for far less buck. The front-wheel-drive 3.2, powered by a 3.2L, 235-horsepower inline six, offers plenty of creature comforts, including footwell entry lights, a tilt and telescopic leather-clad steering wheel with cruise and audio controls, power one-touch windows and locks, power heated mirrors, and an auto-dimming rearview.

Also standard are ergonomically designed power front seats with driver's seat memory, split-folding rear seats for carrying large cargo, a choice of black or beige leather upholstery, electronic climate control, a power sunroof, wood inlays, a premium sound system, and Regor 17-inch alloy wheels. All S80s utilize Volvo's trick six-speed Geartronic automatic, which allows for manual shifting for more control. With 281 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque available from 1,500 rpm, the turbocharged 3.0L T6 AWD adds new pep to the S80 line.

In addition to the 3.2's excellent standard features, the T6 adds Volvo's all-wheel drive with Instant Traction, a power parking brake, watch dial instruments, Canicula 17-inch alloy wheels, and dual exhaust tips. The top-of-the-line V8 AWD features a fantastic Yamaha-sourced 4.4L V8 with 311 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. The V8 AWD features Volvo's Personal Car Communicator, a remote that connects owners with their cars in several ways.

Additionally, the car includes premium leather, an interior air quality system, humidity sensor, and classic wood inlays and interior accents. Four packages are available across the S80 line. The Climate Package includes rainsensor windshield wipers and heated seats front and rear.
