The origins of HUMMER began in the 1980s with the introduction of the military-based HMMWV, or Humvee. Following its popularity during Operation Desert Storm, AM General began producing civilian Humvee models in 1992, and they began producing civilian versions and quickly became the ultimate off-road vehicle. When General Motors purchased the HUMMER name from AM General in 1999 they renamed the original truck the H1 and quickly began to expand the brand lineup to include the H2 and H3. While the iconic H1 was quietly phased out in 2006, the H2 soldiers on as HUMMER's flagship. The H3, based off the Chevrolet Colorado, ventures into new territory with the addition of the V8-powered Alpha model as well as a true pickup truck offering, the H3T. As with other GM vehicles, the convenience of OnStar is standard on HUMMER vehicles is free for the first year.
